Well, as recently as the 70's, it was fairly common to have rifle ranges in public schools. Competitions between schools and districts was the norm, both boys and girls. In San Leandro (next to Oakland, to the south), there was a range that was active into the 80s, as I recall; used by a club not affiliated with the school, but active nonetheless.)

I learned to shoot, compete, and got my Hunter Safety card from the private range owned and operated by Lockheed in Burbank. My dad's friend was a machinist there, and i and his son went there regularly.

My best friend's dad was on the Rocketdyne trap team in Chatsworth.

I shot skeet once with those guys at their Woolsey Canyon range in the early 90's.
One guy they called "Bear" shot from the hip at many (if not all, memory's a little fuzzy) of the stations and was breaking clays all over the place.

My grandmother would bird hunt by shooting from the hip. My father said she was the best shot he ever knew. This was back in the 20's and 30's. He said she would never miss.

I concur. Them're all gussied up in Roarin' Twenties' finest. As for their looks, remember that not all women can be supermodels.

My maternal grandmamm0rz would've fit right in with that bunch. She won her local Charlston dance contest back there in Ohiuh (Ohio) when she was 25 or 26 yrs old, and was born in 1897.

Might be worse to run into them in a well lit alley.

I was on a high school rifle team in the esrly 70s, and that school still has a team and the range in the school basement! My rifle was a Winchester 52D, I think they use Anschutz rifles now. The team then and now had/has many girl members. My little sister shot on the team 6 years after me.

Leuzinger High School in the South Bay area of Los Angeles used to have a shooting team and rimfire range in the basement of the old administration building. I didn't go to school at Leuzinger yet was in the same school district. Think nowadays, the area's youth just open fire on the neighborhood streets.

My high school had a rifle team in the mid-70s. That was my introduction to competitive shooting. Our team had a couple of Winchester 52s and Remington 513Ts. The girls who joined looked like those in the OP's photo.
