    Springfield M1903A1 Leaf Sight Problem

I have a Springfield M1903A1, built in 1931. As far as I know, the leaf sight is original to the rifle. I don't shoot it much anymore because of the recoil and the hard-to-use sights. I can handle the recoil with a slip-on pad, but at age 70 I can't see well through the (e) peep hole for shots 100-200 yards out. I'm considering buying second leaf sight and drilling out the peep hole, but I keep coming across different sight "types". I just found one that's a "type 7".

    Questions:
    1. Can I assume all M1903 and M1903A1 leaf sights will fit on my rifle?
    2. Anyone have any other suggestions?

    Thanks for your input.

    1. Yes

    2. Without altering your rifle permanently, there is not a whole lot you can do.

I would suggest getting another rifle and retiring yours to very occasional use. If you want to shoot a military surplus rifle that was manufactured with good sights, consider getting a M1903-A3 or a M1 Garand.

"highpower" - Thanks for your feedback. I already have a Garand, and love it - -including the sights. Not sure I want another M1903 mainly because the recoil is a "b-tch". I'll stick with the one I have and maybe buy a spare leaf sight and drill out a larger peep hole (e) which I've read is what the USMC did.

Read somewhere once that the USMC M1903s had a larger diameter hole and a wider front sight blade. Somebody was making reproductions, but it has been some years. The battlesight zero on theirs was also about 250 yards and not 550 yards like the Army ones.

Thanks. Looking to either buy a USMC leaf sight (Type 10) or get a spare sight and drill out the peep hole. If that doesn't work I'll look at changing out the front blade (though I can see the blade fine now).

USMC Front Sight Blades for M1903 and 03A3

ShootingSight has started selling reproduction front sight blades for the M1903 and 03A3. These are 0.100" wide, versus the original 0.050" wide. The height is the B size, which is 0.522" tall, which is the second tallest size. Your impact is changed by about 2MOA for every step in blade size.
