I have a bull barrel 308 Remington sps Tac. I was thinking of building out a 6 dasher or a 6GT, something to shoot for fun at the range. Maybe a shoot or two. But instead of waiting components one at a time over years, I asked myself, can I rebarrel my 308? Anyone have opinions/suggestions?

Yes you can.
Action wrench.
Work bench with vise.
Torque wrench.
Barrel vise to get old barrel off. Heat gun might be needed.
Headspace guages.
This company has a sale on 3 day holidays.
You will need to add a barrel nut.
I bought 5 different barrels this year. All shoot great.
Takes 2 to 3 month wait.Last edited by baih777; 09-03-2023, 6:00 PM.Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

You can rebarrel a 308 into any other short action cartridge that shares the 0.473" boltface.I have a bull barrel 308 Remington sps Tac. That includes the 6dasher or 6GT.
I have a couple different 6 Dasher reamers to choose from and I do rebarrel jobs from a rifled blank the same day if you schedule a time to come over in person.Randall Rausch

Very easy to do. As Baih77 said, the only part that *may* be tough is getting the old barrel off (Rem sometimes used some sort of sealant/thread locker/something.)I have a bull barrel 308 Remington sps Tac. You can do a direct swap with any cartridge that roughly matches the bolt face diameter (I say roughly, as there are some actions that will handle cartridges like 6BR - .473", and 6PPC - .441"; I think it has to do with the extractor reach.) I'd look for a cartridge with easy-to-find brass (though that's because I don't want to mess with fireforming - you may feel otherwise.)
If you want to go the all do-it-yourself route, you'll need to either go with a barrel nut (Remage system) or have access to a lathe and know how to machine the shoulder on the new barrel.
I found that a little heat and beating on the action wrench handle with a hammer worked quite well to get the old barrel off. My buddy's spun off with almost no effort at all.Comment
