More for wanting to shoot the 150+ gr options (e.g., Berger 153.5 LRHT).

But I guess if I were to stick with 140s, I could have gone Guardian cut and used mags without binder plates, since you really need ~2.950 for the 140s and 6.5 PRC.

      What's Guardian cut?

My 6.5 PRC is a short action Savage. I got a magazine without binder plate for it.

It refers to how the action is cut to allow for the use of AW magazines. It also has modified feed ramp to allow for longer COL that won't hang up.

As far as Savage, it's not the same as 700 pattern action. I don't know what COL a 10/110 short action can max out at.

Nice bench gun. The reason fully equipped hunting guns are sub 7 pounds is because they do not have to be built to handle a long string of shots that cause thinner barrels to heat up and lose zero. My Weatherby will stick the first 3 shots under 1" after that it opens up to 2-3" - still hunting accurate but not for hunting paper Xs. All my Ruger No1 will shoot sub MOA for the first few shots. Only my varment models with their bull barrels will keep it up all day.

I think it's pretty much a standard short action. Using mags w/out binder plate prob only gets you a tenth of an inch or maybe two at best. Not enough to substantially lengthen the rounds, but still a smidgen better than factory ammo.

I knew that going in. If I wanted optimum performance, I would have had something built with a long action like you did, or maybe got a Tikka. Instead, I spent under $600 for my Savage to get a little better than factory 6.5 PRC and substantially better than 6.5 Creedmoor performance.

What I was alluding to with Savage is that I don't know if an unmodified Savage action allows you to max out the COL with an AICS magazine without a binderplate. Rem 700 OEM does not and requires the action feed ramp to be notched. Not sure about Savage OEM.

EDIT: I found this on the MDT mag product page.

The magazines without front binder plates allow a maximum cartridge overall length of 2.960”. These are compatible with all AICS-pattern bottom metal and chassis systems, but most common actions such as Remington 700 and Savage 10/11 will require modifications to the receiver (i.e. notching out the bottom of the feed ramp) to prevent the bullet tips from catching on the bottom of the feed ramp (see photo below).

Oh. Maybe I wasted money getting the mag w/out binder plate. I think it was only a few bucks extra. I'm not having my receiver ground on though.

Thanks for sharing this build. I’ve been pondering something similar.

Too light for a bench gun. An 8lb hunting rifle isnt that bad for a full-grown man. If he couldnt handle and that extra half pound, a lighter scope and mount will put it in the 7lb range.

This is actually part of a 3 part hunting series that I started posting in the hunting forum. But this video discusses the gun and cartridge a lot. If you want to see how it performs on African critters, go find the first video in the hunting forum. It was pretty much DRT. It was impressive.

The cartridge, which is actual short action, is Sherman Short 6.5 or something like that. It's a screamer.
