Adding Peep Sights on modern bolt-action rifle

Since iron sights have become rare on recent factory production bolt-action rifles for the much popular optical scopes, has anyone had a gunsmith or themselves installed iron or peep sights (which I prefer) on their rifle?

I know CZ 527 had iron sights and NECG made aftermarket peepsights for it. But unfortunately CZ discontinued that model.

Savage 110 Hog Hunter has iron sights and looks like Williams makes receiver peep sight.

Remington 700 has been around for years but I don't know if anyone has added peep sight to one.

Just learned about Zastava Arms LK M85 in 7.62x39 which offers iron sights. But, I doubt peep sight could be added.

Just curious if anyone has gone down this road and if they were happy with the results. Thanks

My vision is still excellent. Peep sights really get you into the gun, so to speak. So much more than a buckhorn type rear and blade front or figuring out which scope to buy or power range.

I have everything from Remington 40X to lever actions, lower end Remington and Winchester rimfires and SMLE, Garand using globe rear and peep front. Parker Hale, Merit, Redfield, Lyman and Williams. Just put an NECG pep rear on a Ruger 77 in 458 WinMag.

The older stuff isn't cheap. Picked up a Mannlicher Schoenauer 1908 that carried a Lyman peep rear on it. Didn't think that much of it until I saw the thing on EBay going for mid-400s.

Champion Shooters is a good source for new stuff. EBay for old.

So long as your eyes are OK the globe and peep will work well.

Not sure when they stopped, but older Rem 700's had the left side of the receiver drilled and tapped for target style sights, even though they came with barrel mounted front and rear sites.

I think Skinner makes sights for many different rifles that replace factory sights with an aperture rear.

Lyman and Williams made add on peep sights for 03s, 98 mausers, Enfields some years ago. Even 7.7 jap rifles. They are out there.

Considering Palma shooters are using them (albeit on largely custom rifles), they must be around. It may end up being a custom install but it shouldn't be all that much of a hassle.

Second Champchoice (Champion Shooter Supply); also Creedmoor Sports. Midway used to have a decent selection, but it's been years since I looked.

One of my first centerfire rifles was a Springfield 1903 with peep sights. I was able to quickly get the rifle onto whatever my target was. I liked peep sights so much that I added them to my .22 rifle. Now that I am older, I prefer a scope, which seems to be the direction of all types of shooting. Even NRA highpower competition now allows the use of a scope.

It's been my experience, hunting pigs, that peep sights are not optimal in low light edge-of-darkness conditions - especially when the pigs have foliage behind them. They tend to get lost in the gloom when using peep sights, at least with my eyes.

However - I did take a nice pig in Texas a month or so ago with a Winchester lever gun sporting a tang sight, but that was in mid to late afternoon in good light.

Haven?t done it with a bolt action, but done it with several break actions and lever guns. Necg also makes a weaver slot version of their sight; Williams, Lyman, and Skinner all make a variety of sights for different rifles. If you don?t have a front sight, get a gunsmith to add a dovetail or drill and tap for a front sight base and you?re in business. Getting the correct front height is annoying but not difficult. Randall did a very good job with adding a dovetail to the last rifle I did this for.

For the longest time, shooters wanted the option to have both iron sights and scope on demand. Unless you're looking
at an AR platform good luck.

When factory equipped, I've rarely picked-up any American classic bolt or lever rifle where the installed sights needed
DYI home improvement to enhance the capability of the rifle. Are there exceptions? Sure. How much money do you have?

When your eye sight is decent or correctable, peeps on 03A3s, M1 Garands & M1As & the factory iron sights non detachable
carry handle equipped ARs are all excellent.

You need to put a Green Fiber Optic Front Sight on your gun. If there is any light at all the Green FO is impossible to miss. At night your Weapons Light will also illuminate it to the same degree.

Also as light decreases you can remove the Aperture on your Rear Sight and increase the visibility that way. Remember all you have to do is put the Front Sight on the target and let fly. The FS is automatically centered in the rear sight by your eye.
