My thought was the Skinner might be better for bouncing around in a saddle scabbard.
I like the Skinner series, but removed them from our new RuMar Trapper in order to mount the XS rail, which came with their own sights, which seem to be plenty sturdy. That would make a very solid scabbard rifle, if I had a scabbard made to fit with the forward optic.
IMO, if you really want the best, most sturdy iron sights out there, with a good aperture, figure a way to mount the sights from a Ruger Gunsite Scout. Of course that is in the avenue of a pure utilitarian solution, and some might not like the looks, but that is what I?d do for one of our personal weapons.

I traded out the skinner express with scope mount on my 1894 because the ring height I wanted to use didn?t allow for much movement in the height of the rear aperture. If I?d been wanting to use slightly taller rings I would have kept it. I could have dialed in my zero with a file on the front sight, but then when I changed loads I wouldn?t be so happy. Now that I have an adjustable comb on my 1894 I might revisit the skinner at some point.

I?m trading out the skinner sights on my trapper 1895 again because I want to use them as a backup and mount a scope.

For the purposes of only using irons and transporting it in a scabbard the winged rear seems like a really good solution. I liked shooting with the skinners just fine.

They just didn't work for me. I like the marbles ghost ring bullseye sights, they just work better for my eyes.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Skinner does make more than one type of sight. I happen to have their buckhorn replacement type, which they just call their "Barrel Mount" sight. Not the sexiest of their models and doesn't have the most advantageous sight radius, but since it's not going on a target rifle where itty bitty groups are expected, that hardly matters. It definitely works well enough for me on my 1894 .44mag rifle... for just having fun with. I don't hunt.

This sight is becoming one of our most popular selling sights due to the fact it can be mounted on almost any rifle with a dovetail cut in the barrel. The Barrel Mounted Dovetail sight looks great on modern and antique rifles alike. For example, this sight is "amazing" on the Ruger 10/22.ARE YOU LOOKING FOR AN APERTURE

And I can always remove (unscrew) the aperture if I want, for more of a ghost ring effect.

The reason I chose this sight is so I can also have a EGW pic rail on my receiver:

Enhance your Marlin 1894 with the Evolution Gun Works Picatinny Rail. Crafted from durable aluminum, this ambidextrous mount ensures versatility for all your shooting needs.

I use this rail for attaching a little Weaver 2.5x 20mm scope with QD rings, if I feel that I want/need more precision. Scope plus rings only weighs 12 oz, so it isn't much of a burden.

And of course rail is channeled enough so that I have no problem seeing through my irons, when not using a scope.
