    Model 70 Rebarrel

    Good evening CalGuners,

I scored a new US Produced Model 70 Extreme Weather SS in .264WM for $579. Essentially I bought it for the action with plans to rebarrel to 280AI. I've already purchased a LA bolt with the correct .470" bolt face diameter, as well as a steel Proof 7MM blank. Is there anything that needs to be changed with the magazine due to the cartridge diameter? Or is this not a possible conversion?

Forgive my ignorance, this is my first rifle build. Any help/guidance is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Dave

If you are in southern california, I can chamber/thread that barrel for your action.
You may find out that the 280AI will not feed from the receiver's feed rails as those feed rails were cut for magnum cartridges.
I don't know for sure if that's as much of an issue on model 70's as it is on most other actions though.
It may be less of a problem with an Ackley cartridge than it is with a standard 30-06 cartridge.
The solution to such a problem is to go to a detachable magazine setup that center-feeds the cartridges so that the receivers feed rails are not even used.
