I saw a photo of a Russian soldier in Kherson, Ukraine carrying a Mosin Nagant standing next to a Maxim machine gun mounted in the back of a Chinese made farming tricycle.

Very cool considering the age of the weapons, yet very embarrassing for Russia.

I saw that news story too! Amazing that such old rifles are still functional but sad for the poor soldiers who are not given more modern weapons to fight with. Sad that Russia cares so little for its conscripts that they don't properly arm, train and supply them. Sad that average Russian people are being pushed into being pawns in a war they don't want. I'm not rooting for Russia - the whole thing is just sad.

A .311 bullet diameter bullet weighing in at 150 grains coming down the street at ~2,700 fps

Russia NEVER demils their old weapons systems, just properly store them in case they are ever needed. Wouldn't be surprised if they still have serviceable WW1 equipment in storage and ammo for it

What the Russian people want isn't all that clear. If you believe the polls, Putin has enormous support but believing polls undertaken by an autocrat are like believing the results of an election called by an autocrat. Bring lots and lots of salt.

Either way I agree the whole thing is very sad.

There have been a waves of Russian surplus in the last few decades. Mosin nagants and captured German weapons. A lot of which had seemed to dry up.

It makes me wonder how much is still stashed away. They made about 37 million of them.

I'm still holding on to my very large grain of salt regarding any MSM reporting on anything.

Mosin rifles are great. They go bang, have good accuracy and an illiterate farm hand can learn to shoot it. What's not to like? Better than using a stick and harsh language to go to war with.

The Mosin Nagant and Maxim machine gun ARE pre-WWI 19th century weapons. Unless you're referring the WWII reference in the article. However, Mosin Nagant's were also used in WWII.
