Long Vs Short - chopping down a barrel

These folks spent a lot of money chopping down rifle barrels
    Tested different loads and velocities

If you ever wondered how fast a 6.5 CM is at 17" vs 29", it's a fun read

    Or .338 lapua

Lots of rifle rounds in the link
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

If you were shooting Buffalo in the days before ear protection- longer barrels are better on the ears.

Yeah I saw those a few years ago. Nice to know that going with an 18" 6.5 isn't going to hurt me all that much.

About 10 years ago I ran a ballistic test using my chronograph to compare muzzle velocities between two rifles in .308 Winchester (7.62 x 51 NATO) that I own.

          1) Browning X-Bolt, bolt action, 22" barrel.

          2) Springfield M1A, gas operated semi-auto, 18" barrel.

I suspected that the 22" barrel (with bolt action) would have a measurable increase in MV over the 18" barrel semi-auto of the M1A.

Ammo was the same for both: Winchester 7.62 white box factory ammo, 147 grain FMJ.

Average MV (5 rounds in each rifle measured):

          1) Browning: 2778 fps.

          2) M1A: 2758 fps.

So, a whopping 20 fps difference between the two.

            It's why I like .308 in 16" and 6.5CM in 18" for MY purposes.

Pistols (short barrels) run ammo with fast burning powders vs rifles (long barrels) use slower powders. For a manual action a reloader can optimize velocity for barrel length. Factory ammo not much choice.

Good read. Short barrels have their place for sure. I know some guys we shoot with from blank blank blank department and blank branch, we run shorties for urban stuff. Most urban engagements are less than 100 yards and at most 200.

                I run a run 22" .338 Norma AI , it's a blast.

Run a Desert Tech covert 16" .308 or Creed and it's smaller than our MP5's we'd run

My wife thinks I only have 3 guns
