Marlin 1895 sbl new or used

Hi all,

New here and looking to purchase a Marlin 1895 sbl. I know the remlin has had its issues and it luck of the draw. Now that the Ruger is out would you take the chance on a used remlin or wait to get a Ruger built gun when/if prices drop?

I haven’t handled one yet, but from what I’ve seen in a number of videos about them, I’d wait. With a Remlin or old Marlin, there is a substantial chance that you will get something very sub-standard.

I have one of the JM blued Guide Guns with the ported barrel. I bought it off a friend. I find nothing substandard about it. It has an express aperture sight on a picatinny rail. I do have a new unopened Leupold 1.5-4x20 scope, which is the type of scope I prefer if scoping a lever action, but I am having fun with the aperture sight.

I will not be buying any late model new or used Marlins until prices normalize. No way I’d pay $2500+ for a gun in production with an MSRP of $1400

Yes, there was problem with the early Remington produced Marlin rifle. But things improved, however for some regardless of that the 'myth' of the issues is all Remington produced rifles are garbage ('all' being the myth), and you should stay away from them. The reality, while there were atrocious examples released that should never have made it past QA, not all rifles that left the factory were garbage. Particularly later production.

IF you must have a Marlin now, and you find a Remington Marlin at a price you are willing to pay, give it a very, very, very close inspection. Or at least as much as the seller will allow. If you find nothing that concerns you, and you want the rifle, buy it.

IF you want the Ruger Produced Marlin, early reviews of the first 1000 1895s indicate much promise for a quality rifle built right, right from the start, and consistency in quality production won't be an issue (one of the issues with Remington was consistency), though time will tell. Unfortunately, any Ruger produced rifle will be scarce right now. They are just getting started.

The BIG gotcha with any era of Marlin right is supply and demand driving prices up. The price of any one rifle you come across might be WAY over inflated for it's practical value. Patience may be in order depending on what you come across.
