Bolt action rifle with iron sight

Thinking about getting a bolt action rifle in 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor. Must have iron sights from factory. Detachable mag. Budget is $1K to $1.5K for the rifle.

Have a CZ 527 7.62x39 and love it. Want something with more energy. Thanks

Might be a little over your stated budget but: Sako 85

    Otherwise, Ruger Gunsite Scout?

Shot ruger gunsite scout 308 before, don't remember the bolt was particular smooth.

Thinking about a Tikka Battue or a used Arctic if I can find one

Have you considered after market sights? There's really nice ones out there...

What is your purpose? Target, competition, hunting? Keeping irons as backup to scope?

I have a Stevens 200 (Savage 110) .30-06 with open sights (Big 5 special run), you may be able to dig one up for cheap and add a bottom metal.

I was going to suggest Mossberg MVP, but then I saw you have more money to spend than that. Congrats.

That was not a requirement you listed in your first post.
If you want a smooth bolt, are going to be limited in your options with factory iron sights.
              I suggest a Remington 700 BDL:

You can also expand your choices by buying a rifle with a smooth bolt and then having iron sights added to the barrel by a gunsmith.
Should not cost much more than a couple hundred bucks unless you want some very fancy sights.

Lots of good mil surplus bolt action rifles with good iron sights but not in those calibers. Spanish FR8 mauser carbine in 7.62 NATO ?

Remington also lists this Model 7, in .308.

I have a beautiful Winchester Model 70 in .308 Winchester with the factory open sights. I learned to shoot open sights in the Marines and consider myself good. That said, I hate the factory sights on my Winchester. I highly recommend looking for quality aftermarket sight. At least for the rear.

CZ made the 550 in .308 with iron sights. Nice rifle. How about a Henry Long Ranger in 6.5CM? Made in USA and there is a version with sights.

                        +1 for the Tikka
Also check out the Weatherby Vanguard - made by Howa in Japan. Very smooth action and good trigger.

FWIW a 700 will become *lot* smoother by lapping the lugs. You need to decide for yourself if the small change in headspace is worth it.

might also help to know what type of iron sights you prefer, and if you intend for them to be the primary or backup sighting option? are you wanting to us a scope too, and if so, do the iron sights and scope need to both be on the rifle at the same time?

Most bolt rifles come with open sights with the rear sight mounted to the barrel to allow for the scope to be used at the same time. not the best sight option, but not the worst either.

The only rifles I know off off the top of my head that have better sights (subjectively of course) is the Ruger Scout (308 only, but within your price) and the Tikka Arctic (308 only last I checked, not always available and outside your price range).

another option is to first decide what type of iron sights you want as your first option, see what is available in the after market, then use that to narrow down the rifle you want. This would eliminate being limited to just what the rifle manufacturers are offering.
