Looking for a decent brush .308

I was thinking stainless/synthetic as ill likely be in the snow and rain. I'd like to spend around $500 but have a max of $1000. At the $1000 point I'd have to include a scope. Adjustable trigger would also be nice. Any I should look at? I was looking at the savage axis 2 but they don't have stainless apparently. The gun shop guy was trying to lean me towards cheracote(sp)? But I think if it got dropped or it snagged on something then I'd have corrosion issues. Thoughts?

    Ruger Gunsite Scout.

You may find one for less than 1K, and save up for a decent optic later.
Ditch the 10 round magazine, get some of the 5 round version.
Ditch the blast enhancer, install the included thread protector.
Get a Rhodesian sling from Andy’s leather.
    Done.

Two of my three GSR’s are set up that way, for the price they are very handy.
For hunting with a .308, unless you want to $pend a lot more, you can get a lot of good use from those.

You can get a Tikka T3X, but it would probably be closer to $700. Not sure it has an adjustable trigger but mine was 3.5 pounds out of the box. But if you want lighter get a YoDave spring for cheap.

            Here's a nice lever gun..

It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Can you tell us how you will use this bush gun?

                Ranges you will shoot?
                What you will shoot?
Will you keep it in a vehicle or hike 5-25 miles a day?
How long will it be in the rain?

                etc?

What are you doing with rifle? You gave not nearly enough info. Is this for hunting? How far are you hiking/weight? Do you like lightweight or heavy? Brand preferences?

I was in the same boat as you a few months ago. I settled on a Ruger American Predator.

It is light and accurate. I put a Burris scope on it and it is great.

It's not stainless and the finish seems to be easily marred but this is a hunting rifle. I can always throw some spray paint camo on it.

I have a safe full of decent brush guns; all of them short, light and handy... and chambered in .357, .41, .44. .30-30, 7.62 X 39, .308 Win and .45-70 Gov't. They are either Winchester 92 actions, Mauser(-style) actions or Marlin 336/1895 actions.

20" barrels or shorter, 7.5 lbs or lighter.

So...I've never hunted before. I'm in the market for a 4x4 four wheeler to go hunting with. I assume the rifle will encounter extreme weather. I probably won't go after anything bigger then deer, but I might in the future hence the .308.
