    My new Savage "Axis I"

Came across a brand new one of these in 6.5 Creedmoor. It doesn't have the fancy trigger of the Axis II, but the trigger it does have a VERY nice. So, I bought it. Even though the barrel is a bit longer than I desire. But I figured that I can probably find a barrel that I like, and then swap or sell sell the one I have.
It came with a 22in barrel. I want to put an 18in barrel on it. If all else fails, I can always have my favorite gunsmith cut it down, but I prefer a swap.
Does anyone here have a short barrel that they want to swap for a long one?

Just for my own curiosity, why do you want a short barrel for a long range cartridge?

Nice score! 6.5 is a great round regardless of barrel length

I grabbed an Axis in .223 when they were $249 w/ a scope. Honestly agree that the trigger is more than sufficient, but I’d love to put a shorter barrel on it. I’d really like to find a way to do a magazine swap for something other than the detachable factory mags - but I don’t feel like shelling out $400 for a chassis and then have to buy AICS magazines.

See the youtube series I posted above. He used a Boyd's stock, which I think uses AICS compatible mags. Magpul compatibles aren't that expensive.

A short barrel is just as inherently accurate as a long one. My handloads may require a slightly faster burning powder to keep the flash and noise down. But even with factory loads, the loss of velocity is low enough to be meaningless. The gain in 'handiness' is well worth the bother and expense.
                IMHO.

Thank you. But this isn't my goal. I'm just looking for a 'do-it-all' rifle. One capable (with the right bullets) of taking anything on the North American continent. But one accurate enough to ring steel at half a mile for when I want to have nothin' but fun on a weekend.

So, does anyone know of a 'smith that can trim a barrel? Doesn't have to be at a shop. A guy working out of his garage would do. Just as long as he really is competent.

A swap is still the best way to go, though.

                      That ain't a 6.5 Creedmoor.

At a minimum you need a lathe to crown it after you cut it off.
