    Muzzle devices

Any reason to having a flash hider on a bolt gun?

I was considering a 16" 308 setup. I feel that a brake would be too obnoxious as a 16" is loud already as is.

Maybe to help control concussion? Or just run it with a crown or thread protector and call it a day? Hunting rifle setup.

If you really like short and loud, it maybe helpful for your second shot in low light conditions. I find a 16 bolt action doesn’t point well, myself I’d go longer to 20inches in a hunting rifle.

16" not pointing well is an interesting observation. My thought was just going as light as possible for shots inside 500 yards.

A 308 with a 16” barrel wouldn’t generate enough velocity for reliable expansion with CA approved, lead free hunting bullets past 300yds. Even if you were able to get 2650 FPS with a 150gr TTSX you’d be down to 2,000 by 300 yards and wouldn’t get the performance needed for hunting at longer distances. It’s a great cartridge but it won’t get you to 500yds.

Why would you get a bolt action with a threaded muzzle?

Some come that way for other states where you can screw on a silencer, but most do not. The ones that do just about always come with a thread protector.

If you really need light, get a carbon barrel that's 20" or longer.

I agree with Trapper. Velocity is your friend with copper ammunition, although if you're going for deer, a 120 grain copper .308 bullet is about as effective as a 150 grain lead pill.

I'll keep that in mind. If I have to keep the shots under 300, that's fine as well.

I already bought the gun long ago, and it came that way. Figured if I were to lighten the gun a bit, I'd layout my options between cutting it, selling it, rebarreling it, to make it less unwieldy.

I'm just hoping to keep it around 10 lbs or less. Not trying to sound like a wimp, but not going to make myself struggle for no reason either.

                  Go with a 130gr or 110gr TTSX in a 16" 308.
Most people want 2200fps or better impact velocity with Barnes bullets for reliable expansion.
Barnes says you need 2000 but if you look at the tests of the bullets at various impact velocities, you can pick where you want to be.

At 2745fps muzzle velocity with a 130ttsx, you have 2200fps at 220yds and are down to 2000fps at 310yds.
At 2963fps muzzle velocity with a 110ttsx, you have 2200fps at 250yds and are down to 2000fps at 330yds.

Thank you for the insight, Randall. Is that something you figured out? Or you have a cool app to help with that?

I was considering dumping and going to 6.5CM instead with an 18" barrel.

Hammer Bullets has a line of copper solids called Hammer Hunter that are specifically designed to reliably expand down to 1800fps. Nice range of weights in .308.

I use quickload to estimate velocity at barrel length and quicktarget for the external ballistics.

Barnes still expand at 1800 too, but the expansion gets geometrically better as the impact velocity gets higher.
That's why people want to be over 2000 or 2200fps.
