With a 40 - 42mm objective I would go with low Talley lightweights. You will have plenty of clearance between the bell of the scope and the barrel. You want the scope to align naturally with your eye when shouldering the rifle.

Scope for Tikka T3X

Good point kayaker, also many times that extra 5 minutes takes you into "is it still legal territory?" Also if you dialed down the magnification of your Leupold to 4x during that very low light time I wonder if might be right there with your buddies 50mm at 6x . After 30 years of hiking with, and toting a firearm out of cases, in and out of blinds, truck's and treestand, I can say size and weight of gun is a factor.I have a Leupold Vari-x II 3-9 x 40mm on my 30-06. A few years back I was hunting with freind who had a very nice ( expensive) swarovski 50 mm scope on his rifle. At dusk we were comparing scope brightness. His scope was noticably brighter in the fading light, the difference gave him the ability to make a shot more than 5 but far less than 10 minutes to make a shot before it was too dark. It's a tough call, is the extra size, weight and expense worth it?Comment

Lens quality always seems to be a big topic and with my eyes, I would definitely spend more $$ to get better glass. I would rather error on the conservative side, and spend more and buy once.
And, do you guys prefer mounting to a dovetail or adding a rail to your rifles?Comment

I use medium Talley rings on both my Tikkas. Most other rifles have Weaver bases and rings, though a couple have Leupold. I only use the dovetails on rimfire rifles, generally. The scope I have mounted on my .300 Mag T3 is no longer made - A Burris "Short Mag" 4.5-14X 40mm. It is shorter and lighter than most scopes of the power range.Lens quality always seems to be a big topic and with my eyes, I would definitely spend more $$ to get better glass. On a Tikka the go to is either Talley or DNZ ring/base combos. They are very strong and light weight. A set of Low Talley will clear most scopes and give you the best cheek weld.Comment
-
The cheek weld in kind of low? That's what's appealing about a SIG Cross, just as light as a Tikka but has an adjustable cheek rest.Comment
-
The comb height on the Tikka is better than most but Id still like it to be a little taller. If you keep the scope low its pretty good. I dont understand why modern rifles have stocks setup for irons still but what can you do. You can also run a stock pack or add a cheek riser if you have a tiny face. But my head is the size of a beach ball haha.Comment

That's not going to be a good gun for target shooting.
Keep the magnification lower and the scope smaller and it will be a great hunting gun.
Get a heavy barrelled rifle for target shooting and put a bigger scope on it.Randall Rausch

Hey Randall,
I appreciate the input.
I am going to stick to with a Leupold 2-10 x 42mm for this setup. And, it should still be fairly light.
Do you think I can use low or medium mounts for a 42mm objective?
If I step up to longer range shooting, I will get a more dedicated range gun for that.

That sounds like a great hunting setup.
If that's a 30mm scope tube, you can probably get away with low rings.
If that's a 1" scope tube, I suspect medium rings are in order.Randall Rausch

Not sure if this is the best place for this post but here goes. I'm a newb to rifle hunting. I've only bow hunted so far. I have hunted for 7 years and have been successful all but one so I'm not a newb to hunting. I'm wanting some input on a scope for a tikka t3x in a 30-06. I'm looking at...
