I highly doubt the USA will replace their 5.56 platform for infantry. Easy to shoot and control accuracy , smaller for more ammo capacity( so more firepower and duration of fire per soldier), less materials needed to make so less money, and it wounds or kills well enough for them to have used in their tactics for the last 60 years. Maybe for some limited role marksman/sniper application you could see 6.5, but why replace the .308 when it has better barrel life, bigger holes, and you already have many weapon systems currently using. The advantages of wind drift and trajectory are not big enough to be concerned with because if and when you must click or use Kentucky windage what is a couple more clicks or another hashmark over. recoil difference is not much and to a trained marksman the recoil is not an issue.

There are a couple of things here. There was, though perhaps more behind the scenes now, a serious push to replace the 5.56 with something that has bigger ooomph. Engagements are largely closer quarters now, with rare exceptions, even amongst infantry, and the few times that they happened at distances over 200 meters or so, the rounds did not hit with as much power as other rounds at similar distances.

As far as sniping goes, the .308 was found to be a bit lack luster at longer distances and there were several Army articles about bad guys using .338 and greater giving them stand off distances to shoot at us. Since the Barrett M82 is not common issue (and very expensive in it's own right), the .308 was falling behind as a long distance sniper round.

actually at this time I am finding no current evidence of the US Army planning to replace 5.56 with 6.5 anything. There are some older articles still floating around the internet that speculated they might. The Army is always looking for something better, deadlier etc.
BUT switching out 5.56 would be EXPENSIVE. So the benefit would need to justify the expense.

Are they really going to upsize to an AR-10 platform or are you thinking of 6.5 Grendel?

They were both in competition for it, but the Army takes as long as 8 or 9 years from inception to full acceptance. One poster above linked to an article about the Army going with 6.8, so that may have been the final selection.

6.8 SPC is way too weak sauce. This is the cartridge that the .277 SIG Fury was designed for. There's no chance it'll fit in an AR-15 sized platform.
