That’s the rub with higher power hunting cartridges - recoil. The only thing you can do to actually reduce muzzle jump is install a muzzle break. There is a cost however and that is increased noise and blast. So you’ll need to wear good hearing protection. I don’t like muzzle breaks because I need my ears when I hunt. I’ve been hunting about 16 years and have messed with all sorts of things to reduce recoil. But the best thing is when you chose a manageable cartridge like the .270. I have an X bolt in .280 and I love it. Too many guys try to go straight to magnums which cause flinching and all sorts of shooting bad habits.

The rifle is going to move. I have a bit of trouble even with a bolt .223 and my .30-06 is worse.

One thing that will help a little is to use a scope with the right magnification. I have a 7x on my .243 and an 8x on my .30-06. More than enough for deer, elk, sheep, etc. The higher the power, the smaller your field of view. The smaller your field of view, the harder it is to get back on the critter for the follow-up.

The best thing you can do is have a muzzle brake installed, that is, if you are okay with the added noise.

Browning BOSS system works well on my A-Bolts.

You don't need to watch the shot for hunting. It's going to take you longer to cycle the action and load the second round than it will to get back on target after the first shot.

It takes a lot of practice, but you can train yourself to get the scope back on the animal as you're driving the bolt home even if you shoot some of the heavier recoiling rounds.

If you really think it's the recoil pad, have a different one put on. It's a 270, so any decent model will do. I like the Decelerator, or Limbsavers. They come straight back AFAIK. That will be cheaper than a MB and quieter too.

Otherwise, I think Fjold and VXI ga Rob are right; it won't make any difference while hunting. I don't keep my cheek planted while reloading, I can't stand the bolt coming back so close to my face. I instinctively pull back. I have not trained to keep on the sights while cycling, and I suspect most others have not either. Maybe you have.
