I've been kicking around getting a bolt action rifle for a while. I've shot my buddy's Rem 700 308 and I enjoyed the process of shooting the bolt action. The 700 with a scope is a bit rich for my blood right now. I've been looking at the Savage Axis II XP over at Sportsman's for $429.99. It's 308 and has a Bushnell Bantam scope. I'm curious what the CG take on the Savage Arms Axis II XP Black Bolt Action Rifle in 308 is. Worth looking at? Should I save up for something better? I'm new to distance shooting and it'll be more of a range gun than a hunting gun. Any advice is appreciated!

If you cant spring fir a 700 I would get a heavy barrel Howa or Ruger American.
But your best money spent would be a 700 5R with a good scope base and something like an SWFA SS 10x42mm. -

Years ago, I picked up a Savage 11VT in .308. (Accu-trigger, 24" heavy barrel)
Not quite the same thing, but I have been very happy with the Savage's accuracy, and love the trigger. You'll probably (eventually) want a better scope, because the gun will easily outshoot the scope it comes with, but that 3-9 will handle most of what you need for quite a while.sigpicComment

I got the regular Axis Xp in .223 for a steal - damn decent rifle for the money. Having the accutrigger would be nice, but mines just a range toy to help conserve my stash.Originally posted by ysr_racerPlease don't bring logic and reason into an interwebs discussionComment

The scopes on those budget Savages are fine for beginners. Calguns is filled with people that talk about $2000 scopes like they think people will be impressed. A .308 isn't going to batter that Bushnell into dust. It should be just fine for the range unless you want to shoot a thousand yards.Comment

Agreed that it will be serviceable, just probably suffer from some glare and maybe chromatic shift both in harsh lighting conditions. Not the end of the world, a leupold vx freedom or similar quality scope is an easy and relatively inexpensive upgrade later on with included rings if it becomes an issue.
I recently had a Ruger 77/357 with a ~$40 3-9 scope. Sucked when it had any backlight, was perfectly fine at the range with a covered shooting station. I would have eventually gotten around to replacing it if I hadn't sold the rifle, but it worked just fine.Comment

Take a look at the Savage 10 Trophy Hunter. It has a wood stock and the AccuTrigger.
I have one in .223 and it will shoot 1 MOA at 100yds all day. The stock is nicely finished, and the checkering in not too harsh. My rifle came with a Nikon 3-9x40 scope, but I don't think they offer it anymore, since Nikon got out of the riflescope business.
I put a 4.5-14x40 Leupold VX3 on mine, and the combo works very well.

My advice is if you’re on a budget forget about a .308 and go with a .223. .308 ammo ain’t cheap even normally priced. Id also opt for something with a heavy barrel for the range. If you want a longer range caliber than .223 look at 6.5 Creedmoor with 30% less recoil and better ballistics than .308.Last edited by deckhandmike; 03-12-2021, 2:00 PM.Comment

These days the ammo is priced close to each other, especially if you get milsurp .308.Comment
