What is your personal choice and what leads you to make that choice. To me it would be a hard decision.

.357, because I have a revolver in .357. Less expensive to shoot also.

I've been talking about buying a Henry lever action in .357 magnum for a couple of months. I match up my levers and cowboy revolvers by caliber. I have two levers in .45 Colt matched up with two Taylor's revolvers in .45 Colt. My most recent Taylor's revolver is in .357 magnum so I need the Henry in that caliber.

I like both. First question would be if you have a 357 or 44 pistol? If you do, match it up with that pistol.
Otherwise, 38spc/357 will be cheaper, and have less recoil than 44spc/44mag. 44 would make a better hunting gun, more on par with a 30-30 out to 100-150 yards.
Besides that, it's a toss-up. Both are great cartridges.Comment

I too am hugely drawn to the factor of pistol / lever combinations though I have both 357 and 44 pistols. 357 ammo has greater availability off the shelf so that's a slight benefit even if you handload. But for camping / hunting I would rather have the 44. That devil on my shoulder keeps telling me I need both.Comment

One's first lever carbine (as an adult) should be one chambered in .357 for the joy of shooting this amazing caliber. Ample power with little recoil from a rifle.
HOWEVER...
One should also acquire a .44, and a .45, and a .41... and at the very least a .22... all lever carbines.
Which leads us to the inevitable! conclusion, and In the INIMITIABLE CALGUNS TRADITION:
"Why not BOTH?!"

At this point it depends on if you handload, because I fully expect to never see .357 on store shelves for years... Both are awesome, but .44 is just a teensy bit more fun to shoot.Originally posted by ysr_racerPlease don't bring logic and reason into an interwebs discussion

A strong argument can be made for either. 357 can still be used for hunting, although ranges and shot placement become even more critical. 44 is definitely a little more forgiving in that regard, but that comes with increased recoil and higher cost per round (less so if you reload, but still higher).
I prefer 357 handguns, so I went with 357 in my Marlin and my Ruger 77. 38 special recoil is basically non existent, which is nice for my daughter. But a 44 would largely have worked just as well.Comment

I have .357 wheel guns, and a .41 mag pistol & Henry lever. PAXYou need a crew
