Newbie Long Distance Bolt Recommendations.

You are going to get a million different answers.

Both the rifles you mentioned will fill the "budget rifle" category.
If you like the accutrigger get a savage. Whatever you choose get
A heavy barreled rifle. As you progress in shooting, and when money
Allows you will upgrade everything on either rifle.
Howa is also a rifle in that price range.
Dicks has/had Rem700 tactical's for less than $400 recently.

Either the Remington 700 or the Savage 110 are solid choices.

Because you asked for suggestions,
I suggest you look into the mount and optics as much as you do the rifle. Additionally, a .308 has been and still is a good choice for learning longer range shooting.

A 6.5 is a great choice. You didnt say your distance but a decent 6.5 will allow you to grow oit to 1200ish yards.

For a rifle I would suggest a 700 5R or a heavy barrel Tikka or a heavy barrel Howa. There are lots of choices and make sure you choose a solid scope and rings.

Good budget choices in the OP. If you want to go REALLY cheap, watch Cabela's for the Savage 12FV when they have a sale or Savage does a rebate. You wouldn't expect rebates these days, but Savage just did one for $75. The 12FV is Cabela's-only and part of their old line, so it doesn't have an especially smooth bolt, but it performs where it counts. $419 retail, so if you don't want to wait it's still cheap.

26 inch varmint weight barrel, Accu-trigger (mine are 2 pounds out of the box), and a plastic stock that's usable without having to replace it first thing.

If you want to spring for a $600-ish Savage 110, look at the Tactical and Desert Tactical that comes with Accu-fit. They include multiple cheekpieces so you can set up correctly behind a scope. It's a good, cheap solution that most budget rifles don't have. It drives me crazy when I play with a rifle and it becomes obvious I would have a chin-weld if I try to look through a scope.

You can find used Remington 700 Police at decent prices to start, if you decide this is your Cup of Tea you can change stocks, barrels as required. Reloading is a Plus too if this is what you want to do...........it will get expensive

I like BAT actions, MPA chassis, NF optics and shilen barrel blanks. For long range I’d start with .338LM

Look into a bull barrel howa 1500, my factory 308 gets .25 moa.

OP, states "something that won't break the bank" and in less than 15 posts he is confronted with a suggestion of a $2K scope?

Not everyone is in the same situation as some of us, I am willing to bet some on here don't have $2K in their car. Quit spending others money, its insinuated money is a factor in the first post.....


OP........get a heavy barrelled savage, Remington or howa for under $500 get a repeatable scope with mil dot or subtensions and go and shoot at 100yds get proficient and then keep on backing up far as you can with the initial set up. You will upgrade in time and when money allows.

Your biggest problem will be the availability of ammo. I would suggest .308 as a first rifle also. Nothing wrong with 6.5C though.

Ruger Precision Rifle is very modular and allows you to make upgrades as you get more experience and need different uses.

What is your barrel for the optics? If you get good optics then you're set as you grow
