    Remington 700

Opinions on which model / caliber?

Like the Looks of the Tactical version. Love 308, but I own a good deer rifle in 308 so thinking about 6.5 creedmore (find it boring But easy to shoot) Or 300 win mag. (Haven’t shot before).

    Probably just a range gun.

get any cambering you want/interested it. however, beyond just a "range gun", are you looking to just shoot a typical 100 yard range? going public land? private club? or some other location that lets you stretch out beyond 100 yards? interested in competition?

reason I ask, a rifle in 223 is honestly the way to go for just going to the typical public range with a 100 yard distance or even 200 yard.

But if you are looking at doing more, longer range, maybe test the waters of matches etc, and I can't believe I am going to say this being I love the 308... 6.5 creed is probably your better choice.

But...since you already have 308 experience, if this is just for you...308 is still a valid choice. and it is a good choice for learning to shoot distances over 600. Unless i suddenly find time to give long range match shooting a try, I am personally sticking with 308.

barrel length/model will be driven by the distances you think you will most likely have to shoot at or will work towards shooting at.

Rem 700? There are so many options...I can tell you that if you do go .308 Win, they're accurate out to 1,000 yards if you do your part. I'd imagine that the 6.5 Creedmoor is also accurate to those distances.

If this is to be a range gun, then how far are you going to shoot?

Everything 1859Sharps mentioned is spot on.

A "range gun" is pretty vague. More information on would help to narrow down some options.

For the typical 100 yard range 223 would work great and be affordable to shoot, even with match ammo. Would work great even at 200 yards.

308 would work fine, as would 6.5CM. But if you want to play with 6.5, and reload, 6.5-284 is a great cartridge. Anything the 6.5CM can do, the 6.5-284 can do faster and give better options on longer ranges or hunting.

There are plenty of other options that would be fun to play with too. There's a reason that "Cartridges of the World" contains hundreds of cartridge's!

          But, need more info!

I grew up shooting on private land. Have shot a few competitions. I’d like to get into precision long range. But I’m not interested in dropping 2k on a rifle and 1k on a scope At this point. And the only place I even know to shoot in California is Angeles Shooting ranges.

I’m attracted to the 700. and I like the idea of building up to Precision long range shooting. But for now, most likely just a 200 yard range gun. Don’t need a 223. Would want a round that could out perform it if I started pushing the distance

Of course everyone who responds will recommend the cartridge THEY shoot.

Here's another thought. Find an online ballistic calculator like the one at Gundata.org. Then start comparing cartridges to see how they behave under a variety of conditions. You might see things in the data that push you in a different direction that any of the recommendations you're going to get here.

You might also check out Accurate Shooter.

223 would be fine for 200 yards shooting. There is a selection of both plinking and match grade ammo available for it.

If you start pushing past 200 yards or got in to competition you might want to consider other cartridges.

Before buying, go to a couple local matches and see what folks are shooting. You might even find folks that will let you fire a few rounds...

Ok. so, here is the direction I would point you in.

If you get a 700 you can shoot any common chambering by swapping out the bolt if needed and swapping out barrels.
So if you have a short action in 6.5 Creedmoor and want a 223 or 338 Lapua you swap out the bolt and the barrel.
If you have a long action in 270 and want a 300 blackout or 378 Weatherby again you swap out the bolt and the barrel.
Naturally some combinations make more sense than other do because a 338 Lapua on a short action would be single feed only and a 300 blackout on a long action would as well.
Point being you can't go wrong with a 700 as your starting point.

If you are mainly shooting from a bench a good front rest with the correct bag and rear bag combination will really shrink your groups. This will get you accustomed to the rifles recoil and it's accuracy capabilities.

You mentioned PRS as an option so if this is your intended goal forget the front rest and get the appropriate stock for that discipline. Luckily if you have a 700 you can get the correct stock for just about any discipline.
                      Good Luck with your shooting.

OP, what are you willing to spend on such a rifle setup at this time?

I have 4 700s. 3 of them are in .308 and one in .223. The tactical sps aac-sd models. And one standard sps sporter.

If you don’t mind getting into another caliber go 6.5. If you are like me and want to keep the calibers down to a min. Go .308.

.308 is a great performer and most people including myself need a lot of time still to shoot it well. I prefer sticking to .308 and teaching myself how to shoot it well so I’ll be with it for awhile. Lol

                            Click,
If you are looking for a "range gun", the world is your oyster. Pick anything you can afford, has available ammo and you would enjoy shooting.

But, I sense you are really interested in more than that. Something that is more challenging, less boring. If so, hook up with guys that are shooting long distance, DG, or long distance steel. Shoot their rifles (CalGunners are famously generous), then decide. You might find a great new shoot that you aren't currently seeing.

Lynn and Sharps have it exactly right.

Best of luck. When you buy, post it.
