Hey guys,
Attempting to refinish my beech enfield stock to get it to match the handguard and butt stock more. At first it seemed pretty dark but I think thinning the true oil might have caused the birchwood casey stain to maybe lift out a little. I used 0000 steel wool and it got a little lighter but it actually looks nice to me. Repeated rubbings seem to indicate the color is set in fine and there is a thin layer of true oil now. My question is, has anyone used Winsor & Newton oil colour to make True Oil darker? I saw a youtube with a guitar guy show how to use it and looked fine. I just want to darken it down some more. WN is an oil based dye. The pigment is in linseed oil and mixed well with true oil. I got Raw Umber so it's a brown earthtone.
Added the before pic. As you can see it was fairly featureless but you could barely see some features.
Added a pic with the true oil and dye added. I just wiped it on with a cloth and will steel wool tomorrow. I'm sure it will lighten as I remove excess etc. I'll try to watch the tinting and see. If it's good and even then I'll do another coat. Probably 3 coats with dye in it will make it dark enough so that imperfections will fade away.
