i personally do a light break...the rest of what this kid says....well take it for what its worth but keep in mind this is the same kid that says all the top shooters in the world have been sizing their brass wrong but ive yet to see him show proof why his way is the only way or show a group under a 1/2".

I think this fellow is more than a little OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder).
In addition, I would not use a stainless jag in a stainless barrel. I'd use brass. Period. IMHO stainless on stainless ought to be a bigger worry than carbon (fouling) on stainless. I'm certainly not going to run a borescope through my barrel all the time either.
I'm no expert on barrels or firearms. I'm not looking to shoot cloverleafs with the components I buy using the rifles I have. Maybe his approach is the right thing for competitive shooters who use expensive barrels on their expensive rifles but for most people, I think it's way overkill.
there's anything shooters ought to be doing that they may not be, it's using a copper solvent periodically whether they use lead-free ammo or not.
My $.02 anyway.Comment

Sig,
First, congrats on getting Leonardo DiCaprio to do a video for you.
Second, I don't use steel jigs on any weapon. Guess Leo can afford multiple barrels.
On a new barrel, I do 1-1-2-3-4-5-10-25-50. Probably not frequent enough. But I am not very patient. YMMVComment

The gun is pretty expensive and I think he says the client he built it for requested he break it in. I think he said the client intended it for PRS.I think this fellow is more than a little OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder).

I use plastic jags myself but he explained why he didn't use a brass jag. If you think about it, the jag doesn't much touch the rifling with a patch around it.Comment

I use brass loop jags and don't have much of a problem with false readings for copper. I also agree that the jag probably doesn't touch the rifling most of the time, but patches to fall off and thats when I'd be concerned.Comment

Todd Hodnett has some interesting things to say about barrel break in AND twist rates (off topic for this thread, but it rides along in the comments in this video).
his comments on twist rate start at 13:40
his comments on barrel break in starts at 16:05Comment

I went back in forth on this issue in my early twenty's. I have read a couple articles by barrel makers that say a gun does not need to be "broken in" just shoot it. I have known many old timers in the shooting/hunting world that did the same. So I stopped wasting my time breaking in and barrel cleaning and became a better shooter with that time. I did not even waste my time with the video from OP for that matter. Also for all the cleaning freaks out there, ask any older hunter or shooter, most (aside from the clean freakers) will tell you that a fouled barrel with a bit of copper fouling will shoot better groups than a brand new or cleaned barrel. The only time I clean the barrel(I will clean chamber periodically) is if I know that debris has gotten in or I notice groups opening up after many many rounds.Last edited by theduracellbigd; 08-27-2020, 10:23 AM.Comment

For a hunting rifle with a factory barrel I would never clean the barrel even if it was half full of mud.I went back in forth on this issue in my early twenty's. As the accuracy of your discipline increases you tend to see more of the clean barrel freaks.

Agreed, there is a HUGE difference between Cortina's info and the dude Sig posted. For a hunting rifle with a factory barrel I would never clean the barrel even if it was half full of mud.

Check out this Gem - from the same guy that teaches you how to clean a barrel

I don't know why that so often on cg someone asks about apples and he gets a bunch of advice on oranges.
The gun in the video is custom built for precision/PRS with a Bartlein barrel. It's NOT a hunting rifle.Comment

so whats your thoughts on barrel break in since your the OP?Comment

I haven't seen much of any worthwhile comments itt so far. Ones related to hunting rifles are not relevant to this thread. The discussion on jags was worthwhile and I admit it gave me pause when I saw it in the video, but since I use plastic jags anyway, it's not relevant to me.
All I've seen from you is snarky retorts about how the video author doesn't seem to meet your approval, but you haven't said what about this specific video you disagree with. I really don't care what you think about his other videos if it isn't relevant to the video in the op.Comment
