Without turning this thread into a bolt vs shotgun debate, which is not what it started as, I would prefer to use my CZ 527 Brockman Scout first if I was going to use any bolt rifle, and followed by a RGSR second.
Being that I’ve practiced with both indoors while shooting, and have a good bit of outdoor low/no light practice as well, the shorter OAL of the 527 is my preference. For the very short typical indoor distances, the Russian Short cartridge, loaded with good hunting bullets should suffice very well.

well, first off, i'm not a terrible shot. i'm putting a whole box through one ragged hole at 10 yards with my revolver, while the people i see at the range with ARs are often having trouble even getting on paper at 5.

the iron sights were definitely a selling point of this rifle for me, but as for lasers, one obvious advantage is the ability to shoot from the hip in a retention scenario. honestly my intention is for the revolver to remain the primary HD tool, and i bought the rifle for hunting, but would be great for it to serve dual purposes. the 350 legend with the right ammo should over penetrate way less than other rifles, and it has 9 round mags.

        Rail, as installed.
The key was to very carefully file a small portion of the stock in such a way as to make the light parallel to the Barrel. This ensures that the beam is illuminating the target. Most of the time, the light is not mounted, so the section of rail doesn't interfere with anything else. After the filing/sanding was finished, two small pilot holes for the screws were drilled, and a fair coating of JB Weld was applied on the bottom surface and holes, to help the rail remain tight, and to seal it from the outside.

A rifle isn't ideal but it's better than not having any firearm.

Personally I prefer handguns and shotguns for HD. If I lived in a more rural area with lots of land in between neighbors, then a rifle would be selected over a shotgun. It really depends on your environment and what you have on hand.

I could use my Scout as a HD gun because I know how to run it.

Just like a pump shotgun as soon as the gun fires you must run the action instantly.

See the Mad Minute guy above except they were taught to hold onto the bolt with thumb and fore finger and pull the trigger with their middle finger.

It is just something you'd have to practice to figure out.

Here's a pic of my gun set up for HD with a Red Dot Sight.

This gun is good to 300 yards with this set up. Note: 10 round Polymer Magazine, Muzzle Brake will be a little hard on your ears indoors.

But I'm still grabbing the shotgun for HD, only reason I'd pick this up is if it was sitting there ready to go,,, which it probably won't be.

Just remember "Any gun will do,,, If you will do!!!"

Bolt rifle is the last on my list of things to grab for HD purposes. So many better tools out there to efficiently repel boarders.

i have >10 acres to keep and therefore I have a system that works for me and mine.
If it's in the house? Handgun.
If it's in the yard/shop area? Shotgun.
                Outside the yard/shop area? Rifle.

If I had a 1/2 acre postage stamp sized urban/suburban area to cover I wouldn't use a bolt rifle unless it's all I had.

                  nice.

i have snap caps and planning on dry firing and running the bolt until they are chewed up beyond recognition, just like i do with every new gun.

out of curiosity, which rail did you install over the action, and has that affected anything?

                    nice work!

mine will have the synthetic stock, so i was thinking about trying to attach an offset mount to the top rail, but not sure how much that would interfere with the sights/scope.

My only complaint about the GSR is the lack of bayonet mount...

I was under the impression that .350 Legend was .355?

you misunderstand. cost isn't not a factor in viability. again, something is viable or not it's not. Cost IS a factor in choice between two viable options.

maximum diameter .357 with a tolerance of -0.003, so .355 would technically also work
