HMR, from what I've checked out of them.

Likely a fun bench gun. But at close to 10lbs, & after glass, it will be a challenge to hump around the woods. I like them, but weight puts me off, for hunting.

Good rifle for shooting off a bench. I have the HMR in 308. Definitely a half MOA rifle. As mentioned it's heavy for hunting if you plan on doing a lot of hiking. This is the best group I've gotten out of mine thus far. 4 shot group of 168 grain SMK. I had 4 rounds left in the box somehow so I'd thought I'd just fire em off at the end of the day and got this group.

Dang that is a good group. I agree.... heavy for a hunting rifle.

He said he was going to mostly bench shoot. If he was going to mostly hunt, then a Wilderness Terrain would probably be better.

I have a Howa 1500 in .223 with a varmint barrel and a Vortex 6-24x50 scope that weighs a ton. Great shooter but no way would I even think about hiking more than a mile with it, if that far.

You want a heavy barrel for bench shooting and a light barrel for hunting. You also want different scopes and mounting hardware for those two applications because you're going to need a fair bit of elevation change to hit a target at 800 yards but you don't want the weight of a high power scope plus a rail in the woods.

There are plenty of good shooting rifles out there that don't cost an arm and a leg. You might be better off getting two rifles - one for targets and one for critters.

              OP, you're talking two rifles.

I shoot a Rem700V 308. I like it for target, and for antelope hunts where I wont be hiking long distance.

I huffed that rifle around hunting Wyoming deer; I switched to my backup rifle that was a sporter barrel and scope. Big difference when you're out bustin brush...

Even though I'm older now, my time carrying an L1A1 around in boots and uniform with a Rucksack has prepped me for dealing with a 10 pound rifle because the hunts will be unlikely to be long distance. More i see of that Wilderness the nicer they are looking actually.

IMO The Tikka T3x TAC A1 is probably amongst the best values for the dollar for a long range bench rifle. You can get them in 308 or 6.5. It shoots sub MOA all day, with one of the best triggers out of the box. and the bolt slides like glass.

It'll shoot as good as rifles twice the price. check 'em out.

I just want to confirm the HMR is a sub $1000 rifle typically if one shops around.
