Remington 700 ADL or 5R

Bass Pro has the ADL for $500, looks like the 5R is about $850 with a $75 rebate. Is the additional $275 worth it? Budget is limited and also trying to buy some other things. Goal is to get something that I can built out over time into a "long distance" gun but only for fun nothing crazy or competitive. Based on how often I shoot (very infrequently at the moment) I'm inclined to go with the ADL. Any reason why I would really want to spend the extra money given my use case? Also looking at 308 at the moment unless there is a reason for 6.4 Creedmoor.

Adler vs 5r

I bought a adl several years ago with the same thing in mind. After reading this site for a while I figured out I would have been better off with the 5r, better stock and barrel no need to upgrade. Some of the wiser members will probably agree with me I hope. Mike

If you plan to keep it a long time and progressively shoot more and farther distances get the 5R. Yes, you can always change the stock on the ADL, but you'll still have the skinny barrel. The 5R has a better barrel and it's threaded for a break.

If you really want to save money look for used ones. I picked up a .308 ADL in the CG marketplace a couple years ago for $300. You may not find that good a deal, but you also won't pay tax and the leftover money can be put into a better stock.

What is the difference between a 5R and this SPS model?

Barrel twist rates are different. The 5R is supposed to clean easier and foul less. I don't have a 5R myself, but I do have an SPS. The triggers I believe are different and the stocks. Those differences will probably come down to individual preference.

What is the difference between a 5R and this SPS model?

5r barrel is better quality than an SPS varmint barrel.
Like at least $200 better at initial purchase time.
You would have to spend around $600 to rebarrel an SPS to be able to shoot better than a 5R.

The 5r stock is at least $180 better than an SPS stock as well.
You can sell the 5r stock for $200 and the SPS stock for maybe $20 and that's only if you include the bottom metal and magazine parts.

The 5R barrels sell very well on ebay too. Id get the 5R without question.

ADL would be better if you will ever shoot with a sling offhand or kneeling or seated. From bench or prone the 5r would be better off. I know you said just for fun, but if you ever entertained hunting for fun then the ADL would be better due to its lighter weight. 6.5 creed vs .308 will start a whole new discussion , but basically both are good and one can argue merits either way but I still lean a bit towards .308 because ammo is easier to find in a variety of manufactures and usually less cost and I am more of a hunter( most my work is 300 yards and in) than a range guy ,although I enjoy range time.

Benchrest shooter friend of mine shot out his old Hart barrel (short range 6BR barrel, probably a 6 groove std rifling), replaced it with a Hart 5R. He said that it doesn't shoot any better (worse than the original did new, actually), and takes more effort to clean.

I am not saying this is always the case, just throwing out the one I know of. I do not have any personal experience with 5R barrels.
