    Snap Caps Question - .308 & 30-06

A friend has a Remington 03A3 rifle. He wants to know if he can use my Snap Caps ( .308 ) in his rifle to dry fire it.

since the 308 and 30-06 headspace on the shoulder "I personally" would not do so. The proper snap cap is not much money anyway.
    My 2 Cents
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

I'm not a reloader, but according to wikipedia the 308 and 30-06 have different rim width and thickness dimensions. I don't know what that will do to the extractor if you try to jam a too-thick rim under there. Sounds like a bad plan to save $15

The 06 is longer. Think long action vs short action. Firing pin won't slow down even if it happens to hit the snap cap, which will have fore and aft free play in the longer 30-06 chamber.

So tell him yes. It is completely safe for your snap cap.

You are assuming the cap isn't held onto the bolt face by the extractor. It won't do that on its own the way it's designed but you could jam it on there - maybe (hence my concern about the rim size). If it doesn't, then the cap is free to slide around in the chamber. 10mm is a long way. At that point the firing pin probably hits nothing, and is no different than not using a snap cap at all.

Im assuming that it is loaded by manually inserting the snap cap into the chamber, then closing the bolt.

Did you miss the part where I said it was safe for the snap cap? By extension, that meant it was not safe for the rifle.

Just buy a 30-06 snap cap.

No, the Mauser extractor will have trouble picking it up from the magazine and then you will probably break the rim of the 308 cap because you are hitting it with the firing pin unsupported by the chamber

That is not a logical extension. Your original statement said nothing about the rifle.

Agreed. Or, if either OP or his fiend are or know reloaders, make one (or several.)

Alternatively, just dry fire it, as hundreds (thousands?) of others have done for years.
