Remington 700 stock upgrade ?

Hi, folks

I got a Remington 700 ADL short action (308) from dicks a few years back. With some upgrades such as scope , trigger , reload.

I am considering the next upgrade for the stock. Hopefully, free float for accuracy/consistency. My budget at $100～200. I did a bit google , and considering magul hunter sport.

Maybe a few suggestions? Thanks

Look for a used HS Precision or Bell & Carlson stock.
Either one will be more rigid than the Magpul.
You need rigidity before you can properly freefloat the barrel.

I have the Magpul hunter stock, it is very, very heavy stock. to the point a 308 is almost as comfortable to shoot as a 223. Which might sound nice, but you might not be happy with it if you plan to take your rifle into the field and have to carry it all day.

The positives for me were, inexpensive, cheap option for detachable, love the pistol grip. Reminds me of the Steyr scout rifle grip.

the negatives...weight, weight, weight. and the "rib" that runs the length of the forend. really fatigues my support hand by putting pressure in all the wrong places.

I plan to replace it soon as I can with a Grayboe terrain stock. which is outside your stated budget, but the outlander is close. just some other options to think about.

You wont find many options for $100-$200. A Boyd's stock would be the cheapest bit not really the best. I really like the HS Precision stocks myself, you can find a take off on ebay for around $250. For a new stock worth using you really need to raise your budget.

Try Stocky's Stocks. Lots of options for R700, pretty good prices as well. Maybe not $200, but a big improvement over the Remington "stock" (not sure I'd call it that) for sub-$300 to whatever amount you decide to part with.

Do this. Anything less is just a cosmetic upgrade.

thanks for your kind input, and also the point that $200 is too low to achieve something meaningful, such as HS Precision or Bell & Carlson stock. A new HS precision for ADL is $469+tax.

With that, should I just go for a 700-5r with HS Precision , which is ~$900+tax+fee-rebate, and get a package upgrade?

I'm not one to tell a person NOT to buy a 5R.
That's an excellent rifle, primarily because the barrels are fantastic, but also because it comes with a very good stock.

Is your ADL a skinny barrel or a varmint barrel?
That would be the deciding factor for me whether to get another rifle or upgrade the one you have.
If you have a skinny barrel, it's never going to make a GOOD target rifle.
Keep the skinny barrel rifle for hunting where you only fire 1-3 shots a day.
If you HAVE a varmint barrel already, just watch out for a good deal on a used HS or B&C stock.
They pop up for around $200.

Checkout Redhawk Rifles i just bought a H-S stock for a long action 700 and it was $390 on eBay.
They will inlet it for bottom metal if you don't want it to be a ADL anymore at no additional charge.

Personally I like my 700V 308 with original wood BDL stock. Pillar bedded it, and free floated the barrel. It's very accurate with 168SMK's and 165 Sierra BTHP Gamekings(nice for Wy antelope)

I scored a hs precision for 140$ new. It was a take off from a Remington 5r. Check snipershide. There are always ones coming up there for 200$ or less.

I sold mine before I ever fired a shot, I think it was $150 or $200. They come up all the time.

Looks like the Remington Varmint/Sendero barrel contour that came on the SPS Varmint, but with a different stock (which is good, as the SPS Varmint stock was about as rigid as Silly Putty.) 1.25" at the shoulder, 2" to taper, 0.830" at the muzzle. Decent tradeoff between weight and stiffness for a bench rifle that you *might* want to carry.
