    Scoping a combination gun

So recently I purchased a 30-06/12 gauge combination rifle, and I'm super in love with it regardless of how impractical it is. I picked up a quick detach scope mount at the same time, to potentially extend my range beyond what my aging eyes can handle.

The more I stare at this thing, the more I come up with all sorts of different ideas on what sort of scope to mount. So I was curious to see what others thoughts were and what would you use if you were to put a scope on one of these guns.

Something with a BIG-@$$ dot on it - Trijicon RX-30 would probably be MY choice. Simple, rugged, no batteries needed, and the gold dot EVEN works transitioning from shade to bright sunlight (I've used it thusly before).

What kind of combo gun did you get? Those have always interested me.

I have to agree with his assessment, and a Red Dot from Aimpoint might be in order. Beyond that a 1-4 variable could work but it will make the gun handle all clunky. If your removable mount is a German Claw type mount it would repeat perfectly so you could leave it off the gun until a longer shot presented itself put the scope on and fire away confident that the Zero had not changed. Other types of QD mounts not so much.

Here's something to look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rC4osGE22yQ

Realistically if you can't see the iron sights for shots out to 200 yards then a Red Dot sight would probably be the most viable option.

I can hit a man sized target every single time at 200 yards with any of the red dots mounted on my Carbines. (off a rest) and that is about all the farther you would be shooting a game animal.

Any quality red dot system will work very well for you.

I have several red dot scopes but prefer Bushnell holoscopes. I have been able to hit 2' poppers out at 300 yards with them quite easily, even while moving.
If you choose Bushnell with their dot-in-a-circle reticle, the larger circle would function well for the shotgun at social distances while using the dot for aimed shots.

The gun is a marrochi Finn classic 612, basically a small update to the old valmet 412/512. A little spendy for me, but given the current situation I said screw it and spent the money instead of just waiting for someday that may never come. Got the combo barrels at just over 22" and a set of 12 gauge at 26", little shorter than is fashionable but feels good in the hands.

Mount in this case is a one piece, my initial gut was a 1-4 with an illuminated reticle. Still have the potential balance issues, but if I can find something with a true 1x it would function like a red dot unless I wanted the longer range.

Slightly older post for the valmet 512 (Similar system), but the author used a Nightforce scope 1-4 1/2 x illuminated scope.

The Marrochi looks to be a great gun.
I wanted an older Valmet 412/512 in 12ga/12ga, 12ga/308, and 308/308 but could not afford one.

              Best regards,

Some type of RMR would be the best compromise optic.

What kind of sights does it have? I would mount a red dot that can be removed without tools.

I've been wanting to pick up one of the Savage 3030/20g. Haven't found one near enough to grab yet though.

                        30-06/12g would be excellenter!

Also, wish I saw more combo folks here - just got a little savage 24c I’m gonna try out today
Leupold 1.5-4 is a strong contender, not a true 1x, but close enough for my purposes maybe. Need to get to a shop and look through one. I went down a rabbit hole last night reviewing possible options, fortunately the 3gun folks are pretty thorough in discussing this topic. New factory mounts are available, although spendy. I think the place I got mine from had both medium and low height versions.

Would love to hear how your experiences with your 24 are! I have a 24F, much larger and heavier, and I really enjoy it! I would have preferred a C, but they were never made in the caliber combination I wanted (17 hmr/12 gauge).

Looks like the Nightforce 1-4 is out of production, but maybe one of the 1-8s (although a bit more magnification than I was thinking and a bit more than I really want to spend) is worth a look if I can find one. Prices on used 412s are what pushed me to just go the Marocchi route. A full used set in 30-06 in reasonablish condition would have run me as much or more than the 612 with the 2 barrels, and 308 is even harder to find.

There's been a couple 357/20s posted recently in the Central Valley area (Stockon or therabouts). I was really tempted, but I don't own a 20 gauge and I try to avoid having a single firearm in a particular caliber/gauge. 357 out of a rifle isn't that far behind 30-30 in ballistics. I saw a beautiful 30-30/12g 24F posted on an auction site, even still had the original box.

I'd maybe be interested in a 357 version and have it cut for 357 maximum...
