Need some info on lever guns

Handgun experience....little to none on long guns.

After shooting AR platform, bolt action, lever gun that friends own, I have decided I want a lever action rifle so my question is....What brands, features, etc to stay away from as I do some research?

This gun will not be for hunting.... for fun, and an extra for home defense.

    Thanks for any input.

Find a Winchester model 94 in .30-30. You won't be disappointed. Accurate with iron sights to 100 yards and more, big enough to take deer, small enough to pack and carry and use for home defense. It's an all rounder that will serve you well and keep all its value if you decide to sell it.

If you reload, .30-30 is an easy round to pump out for much less than commercial ammo.

The Winchester lever design is rock solid. I haven't had a failure to feed or misfire in 40 years. And it always drops the round where I line up the sights.

If I could only have one rifle, this would be my pick.

Decide whether you like tube fed such as the Henry or not.

I do not have easy access to an outdoor range so I picked a .357/.38.

            What caliber are your handguns?
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Since u don’t plan to hunt and u want it as home Defense get a .38/.357. A 30-30 is too much for home Defense and expensive for plinking. Plus unless you’re used to shooting high powered rifles 30-30’s kick pretty good since they’re light.

I’ve got levers is .22, 38/357, and .44 mag. Definitely go with the .38/357.

Mine is a Rossi. It’s been pretty solid.

Another vote for henry in 357/38. The new ones you have an option of tube fed or side gate. Why not have both options?

If you own a revolver, get a lever in the caliber of one of your revolvers. .38/.357 will be the cheapest to shoot and lightest recoil.

                  You can't go wrong with;
                  Winchester
                  Henry
                  Browning
Rossi can be hit or miss
Marlin can be hit or miss

I'm sure others will chime in on the Rossi's and Marlins.

Thanks everyone for taking time to share your expertise.

Golfish... My current handgun calipers are 38/357..9mm.... And. 40

So are 38/357 cartridges exactly the same between the rifle and the handgun?

OP, what's your budget? I'd opt for a Henry Big Boy steel, not brass. I have the brass model and they are heavy. .357/.38spl in Big Boy steel is about 1.5 lb lighter. You won't regret it.

To answer your last sentence, yes. The same.

So what kind of distance does one get, average shooter, with a lever action 38/357? 150 - 200 yds?

Henry doesn't make a side gate .357/.38. Hopefully, they will come out with one soon.

At this time, the side gate rifle models are only available in: .30-30 Win, .38-55 Win, .35 Rem, .45-70 Gov't.
