I’d check what twist rates they have.
With the new heavy 22 bullets. I’d be looking at that. If they are 1/14 I’d pass on both
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

I had a #1 Varmint. In swift, fun cartridge to shoot. Very hard on brass. After 3 reloadings necks would split.

I have my 22.250 in a Savage and buy custom barrels for it. Currently my 22.250 AI is a 1:10 twist so I shoot the 69 grain SMK's out to 1,000 yards.

The standard twists for common manufacturers are:

        22-250 Remington 1 in 12" Sako, Savage 110, 112, Thompson/Center Rifle
        22-250 Remington 1 in 14" Browning, Remington 700,788, 40-XB, Savage 99, 110, 112-V, H&R, Husqvarna, Ruger, Winchester 70, 770, Mossberg, Weatherby, Sako current models
        220 Swift 1 in 12" Savage 112, Thompson/Center Rifle
        220 Swift 1 in 14" Winchester 70, Remington 700, Ruger 77, FN, Savage 112-V

          Pennstar,
Are you sure that 22-250 is still relevant?

If a shooter has one, sure. I no longer own one as I have gone on to lever rifles. Talk about a change of pace! Be safe out there. Humor noted.

Thanks for the heads-up on twist rates.

              Which model Savage?

I was surprised when I saw Fjold's post yesterday, so I did a quick web search.

It appears Savage did make a Mdl-99 in 22-250. Not many, but they made them. 7mm-08 too, just before they stopped making the '99.

So you could have a 22-250. In a lever action

That would be nice. Bet they're a wee bit hard to find and pricey. Still have my dies, some cases and whatnot, so, a 22-250 isn't totally out of the question.

I think the fast twist one he has might be the custom 22-250AI barrel I did for him.

One of Savage's cheapest rifles, the 12FV, comes in .22-250. For those high-velocity fans, it also is/was available in .204 Ruger.

They are only sold at Cabela's/Bass Pro, retail is 419, often on sale, sometimes with a rebate. I got mine for 219, $100 off on sale plus $100 rebate. They come with the target version of the Accu-trigger. Mine was 2 pounds out of the box. It's adjustable but I saw no need. Fairly heavy barrel, 26 inches, cheap plastic stock but somewhat better than average.

Mine's an 11G, originally it was a 300WSM (large barrel nut action)

I have a Savage 99 in 243 Win and Savage made them in 308 Win also.

I have a couple in 300 Sav. Eventually would like to add a 250-3000.

Now if one rifle were particularly more interesting, I would go that route because either one can be reabrrelled into a 22-250 if you want a more modern twist rate to shoot heavy/long lead-free bullets.

I had the same choice to make in 1973/74. Went with the 22-250 and never regretted the choice. My 1 in 12" barrel actually shoots best with Sierra 62 gr spitzers. Averages 3/4 MOA off bench/bags. With best ever 5 shot group of 1 1/8" at 200 yds. Which I consider excellent accuracy from a sporter weight factory barrel.

Savage makes a 1:9 22-250 but a 1:12 should shoot 40 grain lead free just fine.

Great information. I'd go 22-250 as well. Ammo is more available. The 220 swift is even faster and I would think would burn out a barrel faster.
