    Building a new rifle...

Decided to go for a new plains game rifle in .300 RUM, goal is pushing a 200 grain bullet at 3,000+ fps and be able to take a 400+ yard shot if necessary.

Ordered a left handed, CRF Deviant hunter action with 3 position safety from Defiance Machine.

In process of looking at 3# light varmint barrel with helical fluting from Shaw barrels 1:10 twist rate.

Stock will be done by Accurate Innovations either laminate if they provide it or a Turkish blank that I will provide (not decided yet).

    I have a Swarowski Z6i 3x18 50 BT scope I will move to it,

About a 10 month plus project.

    What say you?

For a RUM, a standard #3 contour might not have enough shank.
The ultramags need a slightly longer shank since the body is so long.

Get your barrel blank and come see me and the barrel will be on the action in a few hours.
Then your only wait is the stockmaker and bedding and paint.

      If you want it- cool

What animals and where will you be hunting?

What drew you to this caliber and rifle combo?
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
      (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

Eland, Sable, Giraffe (for other plains game even a .308 will do). Selous, Tanzania where one might have a long shot. For closer DG I have other rifles to use.

I wanted a flat shooting .30 caliber rifle capable of driving a 200 grain TSX at least 3,000 f/s. Also, I wanted to headspace on the shoulder hence no belted magnum. Not a fan of .338 so it was out.

All my big bore wildcats (.416, .458, .500) are based off of 300 RUM case as well.

The breech length is 2.750", so should work.

300 Weatherby would work as well.

.300 PRC? Not as much boom as RUM but no belt, and I think it might fit in a standard long action magazine, if you want a DBM.

Good enough reason to stay with the 300 RUM.

I still say the the 375 H&H will do it all though.

The 235 grain CEB at 3,100 fps at 300 yards!

African hunters don't like push feed.

You can't run a DBM with a CRF action.
The cartridges need to present directly from the action's feed rails for the extractor to grab the cartridge rim before the cartridge leaves the feed lips.

My old Savage in .300 win will do that. Look for those with a 24 or 26 inch barrel. Kicks like a donkey. 180 grainer chronos at 3200 there abouts. 200 no problem.

Well, I am still planning to take my 375 H&H to Zim this August for plains game with 300 grain TSX @ 2,560 fps. Leopard and Buffalo will be reserved for my .458 B&M though.

That's awesome accuracy from the .375, and I totally agree with you on that. Put the bullets where they need to go, it'll get done.
