    Let's discuss take off barrels

Anybody had a shouldered one installed with any success?

Don't care about the roll mark position.

    Remington. 1 out of 3.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

This is on a howa. I assume a Smith can take care of head spacing issues.

Yes but for the added cost of a smith I would suggest getting a better barrel. After its all said and done the price difference of a take-off vs something like a Criterion barrel isnt that much.

If you reload they work just as well as any factory barrel does.

If you don't reload it still doesn't matter but people need to worry about something so they worry about headspace.

Remington doesn't fit each barrel to each action looking for 0 headspace and neither does any other large manufacturer.

If you want the writing on top tap the edge of the shoulder lightly and it will change how the barrel tightens up same as timing a muzzlebrake.

I have all my barrels headspace 0.004 over and my reloading dies work great.

The picture is a 700 with a takeoff barrel in 7 RUM I got for $50 on eBay. I will add a 0.187 recoil lug and instantly have a gun up and running.

                Yes.
The amount of work depends on which way headspace is off.
If headspace is long, the barrel gets set deeper into the reciever to correct.
If headspace is short, the chamber has to be reamed deeper to correct.

Either of us can do it. Depends on which way you want to drive. OR you can ship it.

Are you asking about a takeoff barrel or a prefit barrel?
A takeoff barrel should have already been installed on a working gun and removed after purchase. On a Remington which uses a 3/16 recoil lug you can set the headspace by swapping out the recoil lug in 0.001 increments from Pacific Tool. The headspace fiasco on these message boards is the equivalent of the sky is falling from chicken little.
The headspace on a $6000+ Accuracy International is all over the map. Ask yourself what is the difference between a go and a no-go gauge.
If it's 0.004 there is already that amount of slop that is acceptable.
All these zero headspace zealots are people who don't shoot much and never reload.

I have rebarreled lots of Howas.
A barrel swap and fixing headspace is much simpler than a full rebarrel.

I have had guns come in that were over 0.060" long from FIELD and were blowing up cases.

Probably from people who developed hot loads with jump in the winter and then jammed them in the summer.
