    The Forgotten Levers

Whaday think of when ya say lever action?

Is it John Wayne putting his reins in his teeth and twirling his 92 as he charges Lucky Ned Pepper? Is it Grandpa's Savage 99 in .250-3000? Uncle Franks's Win 94 collecting dust in the corner?

Our local large animal Vet stopped by one day and dropped this off on my cutting table:

What could this be? Oh my, a Sharps 75 in .45-70, and its not a a replica either.

Was he just showing off, the Vet? Nope. If ya remember the movie Quigley Down Under , when Matthew Quigley steps off the boat in Australia he's carrying his sharps in a suede, fringed carrying case. Later he's carrying it in a saddle scabbard but at first he has it in this case. I was asked by the Vet to build this case.

    I did.

Ya can read about that project here:

One of the iconic western movies is Quigley Down Under. Its so popular around here that our DVD is flat wore out. The movie stars Tom Selleck as Quigley, Laura San Giacomo as Crazy Cora, Alan Rickman as the bad guy and Quigley's rifle, a Sharps .45-120. Our local horse vet dropped this off...

But in the meantime it gave me a chance to fondle this piece of Holy Cow gorgeousness!

A good customer in AR sent me this pic, a couple of 1875's in .45-70 this time.

The accompanying email said "Dave, this is my second buffalo and a guy only needs so many buffalo robes. When I get the hide back from the taxidermist can ya make me some wooly chaps from it?"

    Ah yep!

But then I said: "Ya know Ben, got a lot of hide left over, I got an idea." He said "Go for it." I did and sent him these pommel bags. They fit over a saddle horn instead of going behind the seat like saddle bags and have a handy dandy holster under the right side.

Do you have any forgotten lever guns? Whats the cool stories that goes with em?

Wow, you've done some fantastic work on all of those items and you photograph them really nicely as well.

I'm almost ashamed to say my first "lever gun" was just a Daisy Red Ryder type. But when I do think of lever guns, I do think of Winchester's and specifically the classic 1950 movie Winchester 73, with James Stewart and that other actor playing the bad guy, with their constant back and forth battle of who will keep the Winchester.

I actually do semi-remember the rifle scabbard from the movie Quigley Down Under and you've done a great job reproducing it.
( When you're ready to make the sequel, I look like a bit Tom Selleck, except older and taller. Maybe the crazy woman who became Quigley's Down Under wife in the movie could run off with Hans Gruber's brother?)

Keep up the great work (and cool photo contributions to this forum)!

You know now that I think about it maybe I look more like a taller version of the character Bear Claw (actor Will Geer) from the movie Jeremiah Johnson. But that would still mean you get to make a buffalo jacket. ... or was it a bear skin jacket that he wore?

Dang. That's a very reasonable price.

The Win reports of the 1885 didn’ t offer this caliber. If I were buying one this would be an ideal caliber for this rifle. Perfect. I agree quite reasonable.
