Plugs. All the muffs get in the way eventually and compromise the rating. Long day of shooting or a match and your ear might start to ache.

Definitely plugs Especially the custom-fitted ones. I'm hoping to get myself a pair next weekend.

I use yellow foamies nr 29 or so, and Howard Leight impact sport. They work great to cut down on the noise and I turn them up during cease fire and have mostly full hearing.

For a while now, I have been using foam earplugs and low profile muffs.

In days of old, muffs were ok. But with everyone and their brother having muzzlebrakes now, I have to use both. Especially under metal roofs on the range. The muzzle brakes make it much louder.

We sell decibullz for this reason, I now use them exclusively for indoor and outdoor shooting. I use them for handguns, shotguns, Uzi, long gun, everything. I run them at 4-day classes at front sight 4-day for gun with no problems. they even have ones that have baffles in it so you can talk normally and then they shut the less than the noise, and there are no batteries. And being that they are inside the air they don't fall off when you shoulder a rifle

Move to Arizona and get a suppressor.

In the ear custom is the way to go.

Nah, move to Washington or Oregon and get a silencer.

Probably the best solution is to get plugs and also low profile muffs. Without muffs the bones in your skull near the ear still transmit damaging sound to your ears.

I recommend electronic earplugs. I use the 3M Peltor EEP-100 or the TEP-100 along with foam earphone tips.

                  EEP-100:

                  TEP-100:

                  Comply earfoam:
Amazon.com: Comply P-Series | Memory Foam Replacement Ear Tips Designed for Etymotic, NuForce, ISOtunes PRO, Q-Jays, & More | Superior Noise Isolation, Ultimate Comfort, Secure Fit | Black, Medium (3 Pairs) : Electronics

Pricey but it works great. It does come with some rubber earphone tips. 3M Skull Screws are suppose to be the best tips, but too large for me. The Comply foam tips are available in 3 diff sized. Small and Medium work for me.

TEP-100 comes with a set of Skull screws and a rubber necklace (helps to keep from losing the plugs, but seems to be very fragile). Also some small sticky foam to put over the mic to help buffer wind.

EEP-100 doesn't come with the above. Both have carry case although the TEP has the larger case with extra 3 AA battery to recharge the plugs. Both cases can charge via micro-usb.

                  Hope that helps!

I wish someone would make a pair of muffs with cut-out for an AR buffer tube.

I'm using the Etymotic Gunsports (they use hearing aid batteries, rather than being rechargeable, which is a downside.) They work well, but I also modify the eartips: Take their foam tips (which have a 1/2" or so long foam cylinder), remove the foam, and contact cement a pair of regular foam plugs onto the silicone tubing (use a leather punch to cut a hole along the axis of the plug.) I found the originals to be prone to slipping out, and uncomfortable if they managed to stay in. The plugs I use for this are called Moldex Softies - they are the most comfortable ear plug I've found. The silicone tips never worked for me either.

I have electronic muffs and shoot bolt guns with them, not a single problem in sitting, standing, or prone. I think the contributing factor is that I shoot rifles with a raised cheek piece. All of my stocks have them, even my hunting rifles. This wasn't intentional, but it ended up working out perfect for shooting with muffs.

But, for shooting my SCAR and for hunting, I think the electronic ear plugs are the current hot ticket. I was recently on a pig hunt and walking through some pretty heavy brush, and my Sordins kept getting pulled off my head. I think I'm stuck in deciding between two different plug sets.

The NoizeBarrier Micro high definition electronic tactical earplugs offer active hearing protection as well as hearing enhancement for extremely effective sound localization and detection. Gun range hearing protection.

The inconvenience of poor quality lingers long after the thrill of a good bargain.

How much do hearing aid batteries costs? Also, how long is rated to last? I saw a quick review on the Etymotic GSP-15 from Lucky Gunner Ammo. The fella had custom molded rubber plugs made, but all costs were about $300?

So far the Comply plugs have worked fine for me. Maybe will switch to rubber tips...the foams make my ear a little itchy sometimes.

When your shooting a shotgun the stock lays alongside your face and muffs are rarely an issue.
When your shooting a rifle and you cheek weld the stock if you have chubby cheeks the muffs get pushed upwards and outward and they become less affective.
I have 4-5 pairs of muffs plus a few pair shooters have left behind after a match and none of them fit my style of shooting and my faces contour. I still use them but I always use the foam plugs with them.

I've owned both, get the Otto's. There is literally no comparison, and I leave my Noisebarriers in while hunting and they are super comfortable. Battery seems to last longer than suggested as well. Would also recommend them to the OP.
