Looking to get into long range

So I’ve been thinking about purchasing a rifle for long range shooting. I almost pulled the trigger on a built rifle last year but I let it slip through the cracks.

I’d preferably like to shoot .308 but I’m open to caliber suggestions.

Years ago the Desert Tech SRS A1 caught my eye. I still have interest in this setup but it’s gonna be 5k minimum to get something used, or buy new. I don’t mind either but want to ensure my money is well spent!

Or...I could build my own rifle with a good optic.

The rifle I looked at previously was a KRG chassis with a Remington 700 setup. I could possibly go down the same path?

Also, I am a lefty but not sure if I want to set up my rifle that way...I’m used to shooting right-handed rifles but if you have an opinion otherwise, I’m open to it.

Anyways, I figured I’d chime in here with some tenured shooters to get your opinion. Any help would be appreciated!

Choose a better round for long range. I would suggest either 6 Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, or .300 PRC.

get into long range shooting can mean i lot.
with no intention to compete, and no need to hit anything over 1000 yards. i opted for a military style .308 gas gun that i could count on outlasting me.

but if you want to compete, you'll want 6mm, 6.5mm or other calibers that the most successful shooters are using, knowing you'll probably be swapping out barrels pretty often.

You don't want a .308 for shooting 1500 yards.

Build an AR10 in 6.5PRC or 6.5WSM. Use a 26” Bartlein barrel. Don’t use the gas system...you’ll have the baddest “Straight Pull” bolt action there is! And it’ll cost a hell of a lot less than $5K!! Unless you want to spend $3000+ on a SCOPE!

As far as shooting left or right handed, which eye is dominant? Let that decide the way that you shoot.
