    Define economical.
"Economical 1 mile shooting" is an oxymoron.

West Desert Shooter on youtube did a project on a 7mm SAUM built on a Tikka and shot it over 2000 yards. 180 grain bullets at nearly 3000 fps, yeoww. His build was very economical, relatively speaking, until he decided to get a chassis. Before that he just used a Boyd's stock.

Is 300 Norma also a good caliber? Like OP, moving from 6.5CM to 338 seems like a huge jump. Barrel life and reload cost is important, as I shoot ~300 to just develop a load. Recoil management is also a big factor. 338 is not a problem, if it is an ultimate solution. Just wonder if there is anything as pleasant as 6.5CM to get me to 1 mile.

If you could rewind the clock and get a .50 BMG, would you do it?

          Yup

I am a fan at looking at the used market. Many big bore guns don’t get shot much.

Real big bore shooters will have a log book for every round fired.

Get Randall to quote you the cost for a quality rebarrel for the option you are looking to pick up.

When a rifle is 4-5k with rings and optics, it makes sense to look for a gently used safe queen- at least to me

Search on gun broker. Make used .338 look almost new.

Get a bore scope. You will appreciate it when cleaning a match gun

Also great for used gun inspection.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

              Is this a good deal?

Sako TRG- Ruger RPR- 700 5R

              3. Sako TRG 42 338 Lapua. Round count is under 400. Shoots well under 1/2'' groups. Shoots 1/4'' if you do your part with hand loads. Has a KRG Spigot Mount and Sako Muzzle brake.
              Bipod and scope not included.
              $2,750 $2650

                  7mm STW
Would be my choice other than a 338.

There is not anything for the recoil averse that's GOOD at 1 mile.

                    300 Norma with Berger 230's is close to a 338 with 300's.

I have a savage 338lm, it shoots well(only been to 1200yds) and I like it.

My choice of 338lm was some ignorance and some lust. I considered 300 ultra, 7 ultra, and 300 Norma mag. I (lust) didn't want to wait for a gun longer than DROS time(ignorance).
So I had a choice between 338lm or 300 ultra in stock near me. Shooting buddy has 2 300 ultras.

I wanted a gun in a chassis so I chose the savage 338lm. I would do it again.

Some of the factors (at the time of purchase) was brass availability, and known loads all over the net(300gr bullet, lapua brass, H1000)ALSO I heard barrel life on the LM is better than the big 300's. Don't know if that's true or not.

My rifle is pretty heavy, buttstock changed to xlr extreme and recoil really isn't bad.

I have stated before, when I take it to coalinga everyone shoots it. I just dial it to 500yds and load a 250 lapua scenar round for them and they get hits with it all day. 4 moa target...

With all that said..I have 7mm mags also.....but I still think about 7 stw or 7 saum.

.300 PRC is also very close but using almost 20 grains less powder.

wrt getting a fifty, remember that many ranges don't allow them regardless of yardage.

Most magnums are very close, but not as good.

At this point I feel like I don’t want to settle. I’m going to stop in at sportsman’s and pick one up. Thanks for the advise.

Going to put a 20moa base with a Burris XTR2 5X25 scope. I have one on my 6.5 and love it. May go with a gen 2 razor 4.5-27.
