    The New Toy!

Just picked it up yesterday! This is my new Savage 110 tactical .308 Win with a 24 inch barrel. Just from holding it and messing with it I'm impressed for the price. $615 before tax and dros, and Savage has a $100 rebate going wich makes it $515. I couldn't pass that up. The accustock is super sturdy for a factory synthetic. The barrel is fluted and surprisingly heavey as I'm used to my 783 and 1903a3 spotter barrels. Comes with a threaded end, big *** bolt handle and a 20 MOA rail wich is a plus! I also love the detachable mag idea. That and the 24 inch barrel was a big deciding factor for me.

I'm super excited to get this rifle. This is my first somewhat long range purpose rifle. Furthest I've shot anything so far is 300 yards so I'm pumped to see how far I can push my self with it. I couldn't just let it sit here so I alrwady gave it a good cleaning and lube so she is ready to go. Now I just have to save a bit and get some glass, muzzle brake and probably a bipod.

I'm also going to get some reloading equipment soon and this will probably the first rifle I make loads for so that is super big for me aswell.
So dam excited right now!! I will definitely post my experiences with it once I get it out to the range.

Nice! If it's anything like my Savage 10, .223 Rem, it will be a great shooter.

Enjoy, and let us know how she shoots!

Get some glass and I believe that they shoot 1,000 yards at Camp Pendleton.

That's the goal, work my way to 1k yards. Might steal a scope off my other rifle to see how it does on paper at 100 until I get one for it.

22" barrel, 1:9 twist. It will easily shoot moa at 100 yards. I am very happy with this rifle.

Don't drop your bolt on your toe, that handle's going to leave a mark.

Oh nice. Reason I ask is I have a rem 783 in .223 with a 1:9 aswell and I cant get that ***** to group for ****! Thinking about a rebarrel and doing 1:7 so I can shoot the heavier bullets. Preferred barrel blanks makes some nice prefits for it.

Haha, seriously. The thing weighs a ton!

69 gr bullets are supposed to shoot well in 1:9, have you tried those?

I thought 1:9 is supposed to be for lighter bullets and 1:7 better for 55grain and up? I've tried everything. Only thing that shoot half decent is 55 grain fmj and winchester varmint. But it's no moa groups, more like 1.5 or worse. The gold medal match stuff did real bad.

Hmm, maybe it's not really 1 in 9. Verify it with a patch and cleaning rod.

Berger has a twist rate calculator on their website. There are others also. Do a search.

Interesting. According to my research on .223 bullets, a 1:9 twist rate works best for slightly heavier bullets; 62 to 77 gr, and my own experience bears this out. I am using Federal Fusion MSR 62 gr, and the results are excellent. I also get good results with 69 and 77 gr. Savage actually recommends 69 gr for best performance for my rifle.

During my trials, I shot some Federal American Eagle and Fiocchi 55 gr. Accuracy was decent, but not nearly as good as 62, or 69 gr.

My shooting is on the bench using Caldwell bags and a Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40mm scope.

As Sigstroker mentioned, you might want to check the twist rate on your 783.

I'll check it myself then. Remington advertises it as 1:9. Like I said I've tried everything from 40g varmint rounds to 77g gold medal match. It dosent group very good. At 300 yards I cant even hit a 8 inch plate! The shots are everywhere. I did better with my marlin 30-30 and my ar, haha. It's a shame cause I really like the action. It dosent give any issues and has become very smooth over time. It seems to do best in the mid range. I'll have to get some 62s and try again.

I actually saved one of my targets. On this trip the best was the Remington soft point 55g at just under 2 inches at 100 yards. I have shot better recently but not by much.

That new 308 should be a tack driver. With a 1:9 twist in your .223 you might get up to a 77g if your lucky. A 69g bullet works pretty well in my Savage barrel. I can get the 77's to shoot 1/2" groups but the 69's are the ticket in my gun. I can also shoot a 50g lead free bullet with 1/4" groups as well. The 62's and 64's are all under 1/2" too.

Try some BlackHills ammo in that 223 in 55 grain.
