Most important 700 modifications for a precision rifle?

If you were starting today with a Remington 700 you intended to use as a long range set up for 600 to 1000 yards, I have some questions I'd love to get ideas on:

    1. What factory model would you go with? Is there any factory model that they make that is still half decent?

    2. I'm already loaded up with everything for loading precision .308 from the right dies to brass. 6.5 Creedmoor would be a new caliber to load for. Is 6.5 Creed worth it if you actually plan on doing most of your shooting in the 600-1000 yard range?

    3. What modifications would you make to the rifle?

    4. Are there any bad years or models of Remington that are to be avoided at all costs? Buying used is fine with me.

I'm thinking of going with a 20in .308 XCR compact, putting on an HS Precision Stock, Leupold LR glass in a set of leupold rings and bases. Probably add on a Harris bipod, KRG Bolt knob, and see how it goes. I eventually may have it trued/re-barreled and threaded. Is this a horrid idea?

My other option is to go with a factory Tikka T3X CTR and not mess with it.

    Thanks.

1.no more factory rifles for me, unless if it's a high end one. Like AI or Barret MRAD. Or buy the cheapest 700, shoot it like you stole it (or just replace the bbl). Or just buy a custom 700 footprint action. there are many in the market now. Big Horn Origin is decent price ($825). Control feed, mechanical ejector, pinned and screw rail (20moa only). pinned recoil lug. 2-lug action, tool-free bolt head switch/change.

    2. Yes, use 308 to train to learn wind, and 6.5 for distance.

    3. Barrel

    4. IDK

I'm pretty darn recoil sensitive and so the choice between .308 and 6.5 Cr is rather simple...the latter is so much more forgiving and comfortable to shoot. It is now readily available commercially as well which helps.

I ended up rebarreling my .308 to a 6.5x47Lapua but a 6.5 Cr would have been a great option as well.

I thought long and hard about building a gun from parts along with the help of a great gunsmith but i like my rifle and so the choice was easy...and it saved me some $. I was so close to picking up a Defiance or a Bighorn or a Terminus but by the time i added up all the costs associated i struggled with the cost.

If i didn't have a rifle platform that i found favorable i might just go for a Tikka T3x Tac A1 and be done with it. While there are a ton of extra modifications available for the Remington 700 platform, for my needs there are enough available for the Tikka. It's on sale now at Eurooptic for $1648 and includes an extra magazine.

        If you calculate how much.
Trigger, bolt knob conversion, bolt lift mod , stock or chassis. Might need a mag conversion. And then not happy with barrel. So you upgrade.

Just start with a nice action and barrel.
Or get the Remington 700 precision.

But I find the Ruger RPR had everything I need. And I shoot 100 to 600 only. But I got a real good price on the Ruger.

Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

          1) i’d take a serious look at the remington 700 sendero as an entry level rifle
1a) not mentioned in your post, but the importance of good glass can’t be overlooked.
          2) i have 2 factory Winchester’s one in 300 WM and the other in 7mm Rem Mag, if remington’s quality is questionable, look at other brands like ruger, winchester, etc
          3) re-profile the action to the barrel so that it’s true, bed the stock/add weight
          4) don’t know, i think the rifles built after remington was acquired by freedom group

          hope this helps

The question is... how do you shoot now?

The Remington 5R is a great value...

Enjoy 2500 rounds - 7500 rounds of 308 if you need to improve your skill before rebarreling....

What to change.. it all depends on how it shoots with your hand loads....

If you have a 3/8 MOA rifle.... from the factory.... enjoy it

If you can start with an action and stock that you will keep... that is great...

I might also suggest buying a used match gun.... you can always rebarrel as needed....

Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Couple months ago I bought a cheap R700 for a long-ish range hunting rig.
                After.....

                Trigger
                Bottom metal
                Mags
                Threaded barrel
                Brake.
                HS precision stock
                Steiner scope

                It ain't cheap no more.

Go with a heavy barrel howa/savage to save on some of the extra's needed for
                The 700.

BTW........I did this on purpose, yes I could have bought different but I wanted to "build" my rifle.

That's an awesome deal on the AX

EuroOptics got a 300wm AX, black 20" for $5000, good deal too. Not sure if it was a demo or showroom or new.

As for what upgrades on 700: trigger, barrel, stock

Tikka CTR in 6.5CM, throw a YoDave or Elay Precision $10 spring in the trigger, toss the factory stock and buy a KRG Bravo and buy a Harris or Atlas CAL and call it a day. Plus whatever optic u want to use.
                      Tikka $1000 out the door

Remington 700 5r is the best barrel coming off the line according to Randall. Buy one, put on a timney trigger, youll have a nice shooter.

Why do you want to handicap yourself with a 20 inch barrel on a cartridge that is already marginal?

How much money are you going to ultimately put into the rifle? If you can gather the money, just get a Masterpiece Arms Production rifle for 2k:

Comes with a custom action, they say Curtis 3 lug, which sounds a lot like an Axiom(Remington pattern). Good chassis, good barrel, Trigger Tech trigger, AICS magazine compatible.

                            1) The 5R, or xcr. They still make good rifles, most people that don't like them hop on the second hand information bandwagon, or compare a 450 dollar adl to a 1500 dollar bergara.

                            2) It is worth getting a 6.5 creedmoor, its not worth getting a 6.5x47 or some other 6.5 variant.

                            3) Depends on your goal. Are you competing in matches where x-counts matter? If not shoot your gun until you find out what you want, trigger, barrel, scope, whatever.

                            4) No. The new ones made on cnc machines are straighter than old ones, but for whatever reason people think the old ones are better.

I started with a 308, and 6.5 is just easier and has less recoil. I didn't walk uphill to school, both ways in the snow, so you can call me a recoil wimp if you want but it is way more comfortable to shoot.

My two custom 6.5 cm setups
700 action, pac nor barrel, jewell trigger, mcmillan stock, 20 moa base, muzzle brake, harris bipod.

700 action, pac nor barrel, jewell rigger, grayboe stock, hinged floorplate, harris bipod, swfa scope.

Gen 1 milspec 5r. Mine was $650 after a rebate. Shoots lights out! AR15BARRELS recommends them highly. Sticking with .308 since you have the supplies is great. Save money and get range time in.
