    Resident AR-15 Build Expert?

Someone on the MB would be great. If not... then a retailer?

Looking to build an AR-15... short barrel... legal for AZ... but also legal in CA with installation of a Kali-Key (converts a full-featured black rifle to bolt action by replacing the BCG and charging handle).

    Any help appreciated.

Not certain exactly what you want from this person? Are you referring to having someone build it for you?

          .
I am looking for direction. I want to stay within the lines... but I am willing to build it.

          Thank you.

It’s going to be difficult to find a stranger willing to help you for free. I have helped people online with builds, and helped many friends.

I’d have no problem giving you a hand. (Literally! Because I only have ONE! LOL). But I’m on the other side of the country, so... But honestly, I haven’t really come across any others that do stuff free. But then, I’m disabled and have the time.(when pain allows anyway)

I took “short barrel” to mean 16”?? I hope. You know you need a tax stamp for anything less. Now, in Arizona you can build a pistol and use a brace. The new braces out now are pretty fantastic and really give a person no reason to ever want an SBR! But I’m not certain what all the laws are in California concerning them. I’m sure not all that good!

I’ll say with that, I went through the SBR stage over a decade ago! Long before the pistol braces were available! But it ran out of steam when I really got into ballistics. Short barrels KILL a 223’s performance! Turns it into a 22 basically. I prefer 18” barrels on all my built AR’s anymore.

Forgive my lack of precise language... I am fairly new to the building world. I am not looking to be some sort legal-ordinance-ninja test case. I cannot afford personally or professionally to be that guy.

I am thinking of a legal barrel... as you say, I think 16" is the limit (length of barrel is not my primary target... the features are)? As I understand... that includes the muzzle device - flash hider or comp)? If so... I would probably think a 14.5" barrel with a pinned or permanently affixed muzzle device? Maybe something low profile enough to still allow making changes to the gas system if needed?

I have a couple of compliant featureless AR's... I am just looking for something with all the bells and whistles that I can use at my brother's place in AZ. I understand that all those features make it not compliant in semi-auto (without going with a maglock or similar) in CA..

I just want to be able to build a rifle like the one I shoot in AZ... that will be legal in CA. The Kali-Key bolt action seems like an easy and quick switch out depending on which state I am in? I would keep a BCG for AZ and a Kali-Key BCG when in CA (thus allowing me most of the desired features).

Does this make sense? If I am misunderstanding this... please educate me. I am trying to get a clear understanding before I start buying parts.

All I have currently that I considering for this build is an M4E1 lower.

Thank you for your help and patience.

                  .

That is what I thought. Honestly, just go with a 16” barrel. If you do a 14.5 you will need a muzzle break perm attached, because Flash Hiders are illegal. If you go 16” Barrel, you can swap back & forth.

And flash hiders are SOO much better! I hate the extra noise from a muzzle break.

I only use the Surfire Eliminator FH. This one:

I’ve also used the Daniel Defense in the past, and it’s pretty nice. But I like the Surefire more, and it works better!

Just PPT an AR pistol and have your brother build an 80% lower with a brace that he keeps for you in AZ. When you visit, just bring the upper from your pistol and slap it on the 80% lower.

Get an FC Hook (if you don't mind a fixed magazine), then you can have a "full featured" semi-auto AR. When you go back to AZ, just switch it out for a standard Magazine release. Only takes a minute or two.

                            Remember, 10 round magazine.

He doesn’t need a pistol! (Why don’t people read ALL the posts!) He meant SHORT barrel as in 16”! NOT SBR barrel lengths UNDER 16”! I bet someone else will STILL mention a Pistol Lower, and or Brace! LOL!
