      300 Savage is a good choice for a SR mauser if you keep pressures reasonable. Downside is ammo is not near as plentiful as it once was. And it's spendy. For that price on a rebarrel, hard to pass up.

              They used to sell a prefit barrel made by Adams& Bennett for $75 brand new but they needed bluing.
              Sounds like your gunsmith has a take off barrel he wants to use up.
