Well we got off to a early start at 6 AM to beat the heat which was expected to be 99 degrees.
We had Ken Eng and Mark Morales both shooting 510 DTC cartridges while I was shooting a 375/50BMG or Mach V as Klaus named it.
We had Scott Nicholas and Vaughn all shooting 338 Lapuas and my second gun was a 338 Lapua Ackley Improved and Mark shot a second gun that was a 338 Lapua as well.
6 shooters and 8 guns on the line.
Vaughn was the first shooter of the day and this guy was on fire.
His first shot at 2021 yards missed the gong by less than a foot and he hit it the next two shots.
He went hot and hit it 8 out of 10 shots.
The rest of the shooters where getting hits but we were having a hard time spotting our misses that were next to the gong.
When my turn came up I managed to get 4 hits on my first 6 shots and quit shooting to save my barrel.
Our rules only require 4/10 to advance to the next distance which was 2435 yards.
By now the heat was starting to get warmer bringing extra mirage into the equation and making it very hard to spot your shots.
I decided to hold a second match at 2021 yards before moving back to 2435 yards for the shoot off and Vaughn and myself both got 3/10 Ken got 2/10 Mark and Nicholas got 1/10 and Scott who shot 8th didn't connect.
Had we been able to spot our misses the scores would have improved.
Vaughn and myself moved to the 2435 yard gong and seeing impacts was all but impossible even with a Schmidt and Bender pair of big eyes.
Luckily when my turn came up the bullet kicked up some dust and this allowed me to make a correction get a hit and win the match.
At this point everyone was shooting up any spare ammo they had laying around and we called it a day.
A huge Thank You goes to Billygoat Machine for building me a rifle that can make me competitive. I'm not a very good shooter so building me a winning combination takes alot of skill.
It should be noted that BillyGoat Machine barrelled Ken's and Marks guns as well.
After the match was over I drive up the mountain to pull the gongs and the T1000 hit indicator took its first hit.
Also my new upright had a couple bullet impacts.

Wnick308 from Calguns gave it a try and when that big yellow light started flashing he looked very excited and relieved.
Spotting misses at that distance is the key and once Rubin and Scott called his miss he dialed in and rang the gong like the dinner bell on the Ponderosa.
We shot on the gentle slope of what looked like dead grass but beneath it was volcanic rock so we could see chunks of black rock flying around but very little dust.

URSA Reno Match Results

Do you think the best and biggest spotting scope like the Swarovski BTX 95mm or ATX/stx 30-70 95mm could make spotting easier that day, or the mirage just makes them all useless?

On my rifle scope I had to dial magnification down to 10-15x on a sunny day even in hills not dessert, but I have not tried my crappy vortex razor hd spotting scope in those conditions.

I think Ruben was using a Schmidt and Bender 85 binocular spotter and his calls were all spot on.
URSA regular whitemamba just got his 95mm Swarovski binocular spotter but I have yet to look through it.
This isn't going to sound right but your glass needs to be better than the guys your shooting against then you have an edge on them.
In that kind of heat nothing seems to work even the laser range finders can't get a reading like they can in the morning.

That picture is of my 338 Lapua Ackley Improved and I wasn't using a rear rest just trying to spot a hit and that never happened in two days.

I've got good Leica HD and Swarovski spotters and use one or the other several times a week. If there is mirage, it's going to wipe out the image no matter what.
If I ever manage to make an event, I'll bring them both. You people and your weekends off though...

I did a flyby for Lynn to Upper Lake site last weekend and it it had reopened.

The target road and 2K shooting position are overgrown. The road in doesn't look like it's in much different condition. There are a lot of burned trees near the road in that could come down, but there are 2 ways into that spot.

Yeah when Shaun sent the pictures I was very happy to see it open.
I was told June/July of 2020 so a huge Kudo to the forest service for getting it open.

For those wondering why there isn't anything up on the URSA site, I'm waiting on build sheet info from Vaughn (for the Stats spreadsheets) - several important items not included in his online registration (which I don't seat up front - only after a shooter nails an achievement target, which Vaughn did). Sent him e-mail on Thursday but as yet no reply. [That e-mail didn't bounce.]
