    Howa 1500 failure to extract

Went to the range today and shot about 100 rounds of factory Fiocchi Rifle Shooting dynamics .223 55gr FMJs and 1 out of 4 or 5 would totally fail to extract, meaning the extractor claw would not go over the rim and the cartridge would stay in the chamber. I had to use a dowel to tap out the cartridges for those. Even when I ran the bolt multiple times, the claw would never latch on.

For the other 80 percent or so from the same box of bullets some would extract and eject very positively, and some would extract but fail to eject and stay in the action.

Trying to figure out what's wrong so thought I'd start by taking apart and cleaning the extractor and ejector, but I can't get the pins out. I tried with a regular steel hammer and it wouldn't budge. Perhaps I really have to pound it but I was afraid of damaging something in case there was a trick to removing it.

Here is a vid of what I mean - spent cartridges from the same box of factory bullets where first one extracts and ejects very positively and the second fails to extract:

    Thx for any expert help.

    Look for a YouTube video.

Did you try different ammo ?
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.
    I'm Back.

Check the simple stuff first. The Howa has a Mini 16 type extractor. Check for some crap under it, in front of the pivot pin, causing the extractor to not fully engage the rim. Is the rim of the extractor chipped? Does the extractor move freely in its mortise in the bolt? Is there spring pressure on it allowing it to toggle and grab the case rim?
