    Big Game Sniping

My fear is big game sniping is going to cause draconian laws that will apply to hunters (not to be confused with game snipers). Every single organization of which I'm aware has taken an assertive stance condemning big game sniping including the NRA & SCI.

I can predict laws proscribing specific cartridges and limiting scope magnification.

Big game sniping is not hunting. Game sniping hands PITA info it needs to outlaw hunting.

Shoot steel at 1200 yards, not big game animals.

      Canucky,

The reality is big game snipers might just cause severe restrictions on big game hunting.

Do the research. Start with the NRA & SCI's condemnations of big game sniping.

What incident set off this train of thought?

What do you call sniping? Long range hunting, or shoot 'em and leave 'em?

Either way afaik, it's not a very widespread problem

I was hunting elephants in Alaska with my 9mm Shield. Dropped one at 1200 yards, with one shot, bullet just zipped all the way through the elephant.
Are you saying I can't do that anymore?

Some interesting comments already. Simply put, OP is stating and I agree, learn to "hunt", you know, stalking skills, get closer, just like grandpa taught us. Want to "snipe", join the military. Learn to hunt. It will a bit more ethical to the ones who keep an eye on our sport/hobby.

Big game sniping? WTH is that? Sorry OP, but I think you just fell into the latest anti-hunting make-up-a-description trap. Long range or short, hunting is hunting.

The antis are very good with negative propaganda, and some of the phases are to identify, isolate, and demonize.

The best way to deal with this is to call it out for what it is; BS from the anti-hunting and anti-2a thugs.

I've never heard of anyone taking a 1200 yard shot while hunting. 500 yards is about as far as I've ever heard.

Bailey's in the morning must be powerful stuff.

Just go over to 24hourcampfire.com. You'll get all the long distance game shots you can imagine. A little navigating, you'll find them.
Also, I should add that as I no longer hunt big game, I'll bow out of this thread. Probably should have thought about that earlier.

99.9% of hunters couldn't hit an Elk at 1200 yards if their lives depended on it. In fact they'd be lucky to hit a pick up truck at that range.

There are people who can do it and I know Several. However they are in a class by themselves and probably wouldn't take a shot like that unless they and their families were on the verge of starving to death.

My range limit would be considerably less and more like 150 yards as I would be shooting my Marlin 1895 CB .45-70 with iron sights..

Hunting is a sport that shouldn't be cornfused with target shooting. By definition, it is "the taking of life."

Animals have feelings too. We should respect that. Taking the life of a Herd Bull that is Breeding 25-30 cows in a season deserves some respect. Wounding him so he can't perform his duties is sacrilegious!

How would you feel if you had 25-30 girl friends that you were servicing regularly and all of a sudden some punk came along and wounded you with a bad shot from his Glock and made it so you couldn't perform? Kind of a big loss huh?

It is the same thing only put in Human Perspective! That way you can understand what it's like.

There are thousands of people who hunt each year and make a bad shot or miss at 100 yards or less. It is not any different at 1200 yards except the animal stands a fantastic chance of still being alive for another year.
Hunting on public land can be extremely difficult and if a hunter practiced shooting to the point he can hit an animal farther then I can-more power to him/her.

The ethical clean kill depends on mostly skill and a little luck. If a hunters can hit a pie plate the size of a ethical kill zone out to 1200 yards-What is the problem?

If you believe that a poor shot is unethical then you believe all hunting is unethical. Thousands of poor shots are made under 100 yards wounding animals to every 1 shot over 800 yards.

You can thank the 6.5 Kardashian mostly for this. In most, not all, people's minds they think that they can kill anything at the distance they can hit steel. I have always hated this, and tend to distance (pun intended) from such. If they practiced 1/3 as much shooting 100 yards offhand (where some 90%+ shots are made) as they did 1,000 yards at a target THAT NEVER MOVES they would probably be one of the greatest hunters around.

They may call it taking "game", but it is not a game.
