Rechamber Rem700P or something else

I've been pondering buying a new Bartlein barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor to rechamber my rifle from it's original 308 WIN. My other considerations are finish building an AR-10 from a lower that I purchased a few years ago or the AR-9 lower that I have. Both AR lowers are finished, I just need a complete upper for either one. All 3 projects interest me, but I currently only have the finances to complete one of these projects.

Do that first.

Since you posted this in the manually operated section, let's assume you enjoy the bolt gun more.
Get your barrel and a new lug and make an appointment.
Its around 3-4 hours for a rebarrel job at my shop, done while you wait.

I would build a separate 6.5CM and that's my own plan in the future. I know 6.5CM is the darling of the long range precision crowd who wants to shoot out to 1,400+ yards but I think the .308 should still be in every shooter's stable. The .308 is predictable, reliable, ammo is ubiquitous, and doesn't burn out barrels (depending on how much you shoot obviously).

It may be near time to rebarrel anyways.

I have not shot my semi autos in at least two years or more.
If I could rapid fire at the range . I would shoot them.more.

I shoot bolt action accurately and shoot less ammo.

Yes I shoot 6.5 creedmoor for the past year. I like it better than 308.

I’d do the rebarrel. I got a ar10 and it’s just heavier and less accurate than a bolt gun. The ar9 is fun for a minute and then gets boringly predictable. Stretching out the yardage hasn’t got old yet.

Just my opinion...and I agree with the posters above. Keep the 700P in 308. it's a great rifle.

Have one of the above gunsmiths build you a 6.5CM, or better yet 6.5 PRC

I have 1600 rounds through the factory barrel. I do thoroughly love shooting my bolt action, but I legitimately enjoy shooting everything I own (well... My Glock 30S isn't as much fun as the rest, but she serves a purpose).

I appreciate the sentiments of keeping the 700P as a 308, and do think it's important to have some caliber variety. However, since the 700P is being used solely for putting holes through holes. I believe it would better serve me as a 6.5. And I'll have my 308 in the AR10 (where loading plinking rounds will be cheaper).

As for the AR-9, I have no love loss in saving it for last in building the lower out since it will be my second AR-9. So far I haven't lost my excitement in shooting it. Ammo is cheap to load for it and it's spot on out to 150 yards.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but a 308 barrel should last way more past those 1600 rounds.

It certainly will. It can also be reinstalled at a later date too so nothing is lost.

Keep the 308 barrel and you can put it back on if you want but get the new barrel installed.
