It might be hard to find any in actual 5.56, they're usually in .223. They're equivalent for all intents and purposes.

I have a (used) Howa 1500 varmint in .223. I think you can get them with a scope for around $500 and at least mine was a good shooter out of the box.

I have a Savage 10 for .223, but I shot many 5.56 through it without issue. The results are as great as .223.

I need a 5.56 to be able to buy ammo come July. I know the Ruger Gunsite Scout is chambered in 5.56 but it's a $1000.

MVP is chambered in 5.56, and will take standard AR mags. Another + is that they come in a lot of different configurations

I'm with sigstroker and SDnewbieshooter on this one. Is this some new addition?

Admittedly, I haven't kept up with the constantly changing laws here, but this is the first I've heard that there is an ammo restriction by caliber unless you can prove you own a weapon in that caliber.

Does this mean a retailer would have to access some DOJ database to verify you qualify before the sale can be made at point of purchase? Or does this mean you effectively fill out an "ammo DROS" and wait until you're cleared to pick up the ammo?

Something doesn't sound right about this.

Yes. You have to own a firearm in the caliber of ammo your buying.
