Winchester 95 outing

Took my new production Winchester 95 in .30-06 out today for the first time in about a year due to previous shoulder surgery.

The rifle has a Providence Tool adjustable rear sight with adjustable iris peep.

I was shooting FNB M2 ball from a rest at 100 yds.

I played with the sight and adjusted it for zero. I took out the iris peep and used the large open ghost ring but really couldn't get it to shoot tightly. My last three rounds for record were with the iris peep screwed back in to the ghost ring.

Much to my surprise the group of three rounds was less than .75" measured from outside to outside edge of the hits.

This rifle is amazingly accurate!







I later used it for some fairly rapid fire at a sillouette target. The barrel heats up very quickly and I burned one of my fingers on the screw that holds the fore end to the barrel, it was that hot after 8 rounds.

Very nice. Although I have to wonder why Winchester put a recoil pad on the 30.06 and not the 405 takedown I picked up a few months back.

Just a few odds and end -

Any thoughts on the rebounding hammer? I've no great dislike for it, but I prefer the old half cock type. I don't care for the tang safety. I've read a few articles on replacing the necessary parts and switching over. Or, cutting a half cock notch in the factory hammer and removing the rebound lever. This leaves the tang safety in place.

A Lyman #2 tang sight would cover the vacancy left by removing the tang safety, but one would have to d&t a forward screw hole.

Marbles makes a tang sight that uses the single stock screw and accommodates the tang safety. No need for d&t. But I like the side mounted sight you've attached. Was any d&t required or did it use existing holes? Am using a plain old Williams side mount receiver peep for now.

I have no complaints with the tang safety or the rebounding hammer. Obviously it shoots great with those features!

I previously owned an original SRC 95 in .30-06 and a Browning 1895 in .30-40 Krag. Neither shot as straight and true as this one.

I am the third owner of the rifle and it came with the PT rear sight. I think it uses an existing tapped hole but I could be wrong.
