Considering Savage 10 Trophy Hunter XP

I have been oogling bolt action rifles in .223 Rem.

I have looked at Tikka, Ruger, Remington, Win M70, but the one below fits my budget best.

With any of the "package deals" the scope is not very good. The rifle you are looking at is fine.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate your help.

I'd like to hear thoughts from others on the rifle itself. I am OK with the Nikon scope since I can upgrade that at a later time.

Do you have to have the wood stock? Plastic stocks are cheaper.

Have you played with one? Older Model 10's have a clunky bolt. I don't know how old this model is. Another one to consider is the 110 Varmint. It has a longer and heavier barrel that's better suited for what you want to use it for. It's also a newer version with an adaptable stock that's pretty good, and the bolts on the newer models are much smoother and slicker than the old ones.

The 110 Varmint features a 26" heavy barrel, AccuFit system, AccuTrigger, AccuStock, and detachable box magazine for precise shooting of small, distant targets.

$729 - ~$150 for the scope seems like a good deal.
            I have a Savage 10FCM Scout that I like.
I have a number of Nikon scopes and I can't speak highly enough about them.

What are you planning to do with it? Targetting shooting? Long Range? Hunting? These are all different guns.

That Trophy Hunter looks like it has a thinner barrel, which is not great for a lot of rounds down range. Great for hunting though. You only need 1 shot there.

Just broke one in, can shoot moa, seems to like 62gr.
Nice action and trigger, free floated but a tad off center, my only gripe.

Read his 1st post, he answers all your questions

As far as the question at hand yes it is a fine rifle, and you should buy it if you like it . I have seen them selling for closer to $550, so I would shop around.

I have a number of Savage Mod10's and I may be lucky, but not one of them shot + 3/4" groups most shoot sub .1/2" with hand loads. I have one .223 I got used (Perevseus owner was a competitive hi-power shooter, freely told me he had at least 8000 rounds down the tube) and that rifle is a bug hole maker.
Savages are not pretty but they shoot.

Preston, check budsgunshop.com. They have what you're looking at for $566.
Just have to navigate thru the Savage pages. Bud's item #78190.

Thanks gents for your comments and suggestions!

I ordered the rifle through my LGS this morning! After comparing his OTD price to Bud's and Brownells, his price was reasonably close enough for me. I believe in supporting the local guy whenever I can.

I do not reload, so I kindly ask for recommendations for factory ammo. Calgunner Catch, above, recommended 62 gr, but is there a range of grain weight, bullet types, manufacturers that I should consider for target shooting?

Thanks, guys! I can always count on CG!

I've had my Trophy Hunter XP in 308 for probably six or seven years now. I've never had an issue with it I've gotten a bore, bear, and a buck with it with no problem at all. I even kept the scope because I don't see any reason to change it. The only thing I've upgraded on it are the rings, and I did a camo paint job on the stock

69 gr would be the standard weight match bullet. Since you don't plan on over 300 yards, no need for the extra heavy bullets. Maybe low to mid 50's for varmints, standard varmint ammo.
