    Buckhorn sight picture question

I'm getting used to my new Henry .357 magnum carbine which has a gold bead sight in the front and a buckhorn sight in the rear. When you line up a shot, is the center gold bead supposed to line up with the tops of the rear buckhorn sight? Or is the gold bead supposed to set down within the buckhorn sight?

Bead down in the valley for near shots, lined up at the top for far shots. In the middle of the valley for midrange shots. You will figure out the zero distances with some range time after adjusting your most used sight picture to your liking and preferred range.

Geez! Now I know why I use a low power scope. My 68 year old eyes won't keep the bead working right in that semi buckhorn. After a couple of shots, things go a bit out of focus.

Your Henry should have a site elevation ramp. Adjust the ramp for distance instead of Kentucky elevation.

My eyes aren't the best, either. Henry does sell a mounting plate, which I believe is made by Skinner, which allows the mounting of a Leupold Deltapoint Pro red dot sight onto the receiver without using a picatinny rail. If I can't get the hang of the buckhorn sight, I might buy the Leupold red dot.

Best use for buckhorn sights is to replace them with something useful, scope or peep sights.
