Building budget precision rifles

My younger son and I are shooting partners and compete in vintage military matches together. Last fall we decided to begin building a couple of budget precision rifles. This plan was sparked, in part, by Brownell's sale on Howa barrelled actions.

My son decided to go real budget and selected a 24" #6 (#6 is the heaviest barrel profile offered by Howa) barrelled action in .308, ($249). While he was deciding on a chassis, MDT put their LSS chassis on sale ($240), so that decided the issue. He recently completed the project with a stock tube and Magpul stock that I had laying around. I lent him a Bushnell 6-24x50 Elite Tactical FFP scope with a G2 reticle.

I'm not a precision shooter but I like you most-bang-for-the-buck-thinking.

I have a Howa 1500 varmint in .223 and I like the way it shoots. I just have to figure out how to lighten the trigger a bit.

I’m sorry, but precision rifles require at least $3000 for entry into the sport. Way to let your son down.

There's a youtube series on a father and son build on youtube by Vaughn Precision. Except theirs are identical and built on Savages. They do use MDT chassis though.

Both of ours are based on Howa barrelled actions.

I decided to go with the 24" #6 barrelled action in 6.5 Creedmoor. ($389). I was able to get a small discount on an KRG Bravo chassis ($420) and am intending to use a March Optics 3-24x42 scope that I picked up at an estate sale last spring.

I like where this is going. Quality parts bought on sale to get you up and running. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I know you guys had the parts laying around, but that AR stock he has on there is going to be real tough to use on a rear bag. The best bang for your buck AR rifle stock is the Luth AR.

The stock that my son is using now is temporary. We've got several options. I've got an unused Magpul PRS gen3 and a Seekins ProComp 10X.





The only issue with them is that they require an adapter for the LSS chassis that adds 3/4 of an inch to an already fairly long LOP. I suggested a Luth AR carbine stock to him (I have a rifle Luth AR stock on my 6.5 Grendel AR rifle), but he doesn't think the cheek rest is solid enough.

Thanks, Jack! I believe the Howa "HACT" triggers are adjustable, although I'm not sure how to do it.
